Do you think it is rude to ask another person what they are employed as?

When I ask a guy what he does for work it’s because I’m making conversation and seeing if I can find any common ground (since work is a HUGE part of your life). But I’m sure many guys are fairly paranoid about this and think you’re trying to weigh up his earning potential (even though I’m much happier making my own). *tolls eyes*
