Very competitive. People compete for jobs or standing. Businesses compete for customers and money. Individualism is highly valued. People express themselves heavily through fashion. What you do and who you know are often more important than where you come from. Americans are extremely protective of their perceived rights. Recently, political polarization has become wide-spread. So the topic of politics are everywhere and many people are getting involved in what ways they can. This political focus is abnormal and I do expect it to return to normal levels within the next 8 years or so. Americans tend to be materialistic and are fixated on money and wealth, despite most of them living in relative poverty.
That's about all I can think of to describe American society.
