How can someone acquire the empathy, humility and compassion that one gains from experiencing great loss, without actually experiencing that sorrow?

Unfortunately, the Research indicates that empathy is more of an inborn trait then something that one acquires. I don't know if I entirely agree with that but I do know that even in children empathy is not acquired and instead seems to be there from the very beginning. I think we are just beginning to learn about empathy, how empathy occurs and most importantly the value of empathy. Empathy is extremely important and if we could find a way to help people to acquire it that would be a huge achievement.

I am an Empath and while have experienced much loss and sorrow in my life I am a natural born Empath. All of those traits you mentioned can not be learned. I have met a lot of people who are 30 to 50 years older than me and you would think that with age comes these traits. I have discovered that you can be 80 and still have the immaturity of a child. You either have it or you don't. If you don't possess those traits acknowledge it and move on.

You probably can't gain the full empathy, humility and compassion that comes with great loss, without experiencing it. However, you can still learn to have empathy, humility, and compassion. It comes with getting to know people, loving them, caring for them, and putting them before yourself, in an emotionally healthy manner. Loving others is the main key.
