Most creatures act almost completely on instinct - they lack the brain capacity to "think" to the point where they are aware that they are what they are, and that they are mortal. Humans (and a few other creatures) are capable of more advanced thought, and are recognized as sentient beings because of that. Thus, our ability to think, in both abstract and in logical ways, is what makes us sentient beings - meaning: we exist as people, and not just as animals acting on instinct like a computer running a program with limited, pre-programmed reactions.
