When a man says, "I need time alone ," does it mean just that?

Anonymous
My boyfriend of a year and a half has just told me he still loves me lots but has so much going on that he can't handle my problems too and he needs time alone.

This hurts for two reasons:

Why can't he talk to me about his problems?

It is the day before my birthday (a very selfish reason)

In response, I have told him that I love him too and will leave him alone.

I guess the only thing to do is get on with my own life and think about what I want too. After all, there are two people in a relationship.

Maybe time is what we both need and that all things happen for a reason.

I can only respect what he wants and use the time to focus on myself (have a very busy job). Trying to stay positive in this.

I am however a bit worried about his well-being. I think he may need some professional help. So how far do I go to leave him alone?
