I'm on the fence on this. I think it can work without either. It's kind of like - can you do your job if you don't love it. Sure you can. There are many elements that are needed for a great relationship. Is every element needed - in a perfect world yes for it to thrive. But some relationships still truck along with a number of elements not present, but others might be there strongly (like respect and trust). Some people don't need chemistry and sparks in their relationship. They need other things. So it depends on the people in the relationship. Personally that chemistry with my SO is important, as it fuels so many other aspects and keeps you attracted to one another.
Love isn't about the flutters, the sparks. It's about two people making it work. As long as you are both committed and making an effort, sparks and chemistry are optional.
