Does "I love you" matter in a relationship?

My parents always said it to me. It stopped meaning anything after awhile. Past girlfriends said it, it never seemed to matter much. So, in my current relationship, I told her the words don't matter; the actions do. We both know we're bonded, already. And instead of relying on words which can be ambiguous and abstract, it makes sense to me that we simply *do*, instead of "claim".

I've found myself missing the phrase from time to time, even so. So. Does it matter?
