Why does society overromanticise the "first love"?

Question

I've just realised that people spend so much time talking about their first love in movies, and music. I understand a lot of it is because it reminds them of their youth, but why do we act like the first love matters so much. It really doesn't.
It goes to show how obsessed everyone is with sadness and regret. Shouldn't we be focused on our last love? Aka the person we are going to spend the rest of our lives with? Rant over.

I think it's because first love most of the times is innocent and pure love with no expectations.. most of the times our first love is at a very young age where we do not have any negative thoughts and our focus is only on being happy so when we get feelings for a person at that age it's only coz that person made us happy irrespective of his looks, caste, status and other things we start seeing once we become matured.

I think first love doesn't remind them of their youth.
It reminds them of the feelings of their first love.
First love (or firsts) isn't forgotten because feelings aren't forgotten.
You can forget someone but you can't forget the feelings you had with him/her.

I understand what you're saying. I still believe its overromanticised, and not so much emphasis should be put on your very first love, its always portrayed as "The one that got away" when in reality there is a reason why jt didn't work out, and it just distracts people from what should be important

fun fact! men cannot give the same love twice. it's proven by yale and Harvard that men are incapable of truly loving two different people the same way. if he breaks up that form of love he made to love them is dead and he won't give it to another person. a man's first love is his most genuine unaltered form of love. that is why we romanticize the first love.

I'm guilty of this. I couldn't get over her for years. But now I've moved on and am focused on my last love. I don't know, maybe the first one is just stands out and lives longer in memory.
