Do You Say "Less" Or "More" By Text Then You'd Say In An Actual Voice Conversation?

I'll never understand communicating by text. I don't have the bionic thumbs young people do. I only text when I have something short to share. I also hate what spellcheck does to text messages. I actually prefer a combination of in person verbal and email. Verbal in person allows me to pick up on both verbal and non-verbal cues, which I find helpful for me to fully understand how my words and actions impact others. Email allows me to take time to think about what the other person is sharing and respond in greater depth than I can when I'm being spontaneous. I love how the depth builds when people continue to respond to each other in writing. Each transaction leads to greater understanding.

Unfortunately, very few people seem to appreciate writing anymore. They find talking takes less effort, and it's rare for people to want to put in the time and effort to truly think anymore.

By the way, I just discovered that the default setting for messaging is to only allow messages from those we are following. I just changed that in my settings and would like to run a suggestion by you if you're interested.

Most of the times I prefer calling because I feel the connection. I get to listen to the response in real time and can get things done faster.


When I text, sometimes people respond late - or sometimes the vibe isn’t clear.


When you call someone, you can get the feel from their voice. Are they excited? Or feeling low. If I am looking for a conversation then I opt for calling. If I am intending to send some information (e. g. meet at a coffee shop or I passed the exam), I prefer text.

I'm the type of person that likes to "think before I speak." Meaning I prefer typing so I can write out how I feel or what's on my mind, without saying something stupid.

That and I'm an introvert, so naturally texting is easier for me than talking to people. That's why I tell everyone to text me, NOT call me. Other than my parents, I will not answer phone calls unless it's an emergency.

Honestly, I do have a phone, but I keep it switched off and the SIM is out. I send about 1 text per year average. Seriously, why waste time typing texts when you could, I dunno, say, have a life instead?

Less. The phone is for calling or setting dates. Not to message every little thing throughout the day.

Why even bother with a relationship if you just want to use the phone as a substitute? Might as well just have a friend or penpal halfway across the world.

It seems like the whole idea of texting is to avoid conversation and say less. It's like communicating via telegraph. Texting barely qualifies as conversation.

I definitely say more during actual voice conversation. It's where you can express yourself in complete thoughts, go into more detail, listen to the other person, ask questions, laugh, hear each other's tone of voice. You don't need emojis.

I find writing my feelings a lot easier than speaking them, so if I need to express something emotional or sensitive I prefer to write it - though not limited to texting specifically.

For general chit chat on a day to day basis, I like a nice conversation.

Text allow you to use emojis and caricatures that are programmed into your device to communicate in a single image what those thousands of words would equal in discussion over the phone, since you don't have the benefit of hand gestures and body language to display social cues. It's like the saying, and pictures worth a thousand words.
I'm not sure how many words would be necessary to describe a three day deployment in Panama in 1989, but I think 💩 pretty much covers it.

I text way more than I would say out loud. I have more time to think about what I want to say and I can reread what I am about to say and change what I said after rereading it before it is actually said hahaha. Shit I changed what I typed just now about 3 times before I pushed send 🤣🤣

It's usually less by text because of the delay. The conversation can shift in topic because of a single reply.

Instead of being smooth like a voice conversation where there is a flow, text is more staccato with starts and stops.

Texting is boring and it's more difficult to convey your emotions and context. I honestly feel people do it because they can, not because it's better. It's the new shiny, and the latest thing.

Less. Text is useful in checking in or sending facts. But when it’s relied upon to carry a conversation so many nuances are missed. Face to face or even phone calls are much better places to say what we say to those we care about.

I do not like 2 talk on the phone so if it is by phone call way more by text.

In person I'm always on 10 so i never stop talking unless I'm pissed then i say nothing🤔

If it's to answer a fractual info question or a yes/no, probably less. For any other question, I find I have to use an overt abundance of words to make sure that the other party doesn't misconscrew my meaning (with apologies to Norm Crosby, R. I. P.)
