It's like the boy who cried wolf. The more you ignore the advice you seek out, the less likely people will be to take their time to offer you any advice. There's nothing wrong with learning from our own experiences, but, if that's what you want, don't seek the opinions of others. Our experiences are not only based on what we do but also on what we observe. Therefore, we can learn from other people's experiences, also.

Unsolicited advice is another matter. Let me explain by exploring the difference between criticism and constructive criticism. When I ask people to define constructive criticism, they usually tell me that constructive criticism is when the statement is coming from positive intent. In other words, you believe it truly is in the best interest of the other person. No!!! Constructive criticism is when the other's opinion is being sought. If you are taking a creative writing course, you want feedback from the instructor, so you can improve your writing. If we seek it, it is constructive criticism. Anything we don't seek is plain criticism... no matter where the other person's heart is coming from.

When you seek input from others, but, in reality, are only looking for them to confirm your belief, that is dysfunctional. You're using them to address your own insecurities and self-doubts, looking only for reassurance and not truly caring about how they see things. If you're not open to their thoughts and feelings, don't ask for them. If you want respect... give respect.
