Guys, How would you react if a girl told you you reminded her of an abusive person she was in a relationship with?

I have a really abusive mother who told me growing up that I was going to grow up to be a wifebeater, so its something I've always had a really irrational fear about even though I've always been extremely respectful to women. If a woman told me this, it would probably make me cry, and I almost never cry. I can practically count the number of times I've cried since I was a toddler on two hands.

I'm probably unique in this respect though.

Talking in vague generalities will only take you in circles. Always seek clarification when you care about the other person. If someone told me I reminded her of a past abusive partner, I'd ask her to give examples of what she is seeing or hearing and describe how that impacts her. Telling me I remind you of Bozo the Clown doesn't tell me whether you find clowns to be funny or scary or you're just drawn to big feet. You're fishing for something here. Maybe if you give more details you'll be more likely to receive what you are seeking.

I would tell her that she can talk about it if she wants to, but she needs to know I'm not her ex and that she must get over that for us to be able to move any further in the relationship.

I would apologize and ask if I could hug her, or ask her why I remind her of that.
