Desires become obsessions when the good feelings of having or doing something become overshadowed by the bad feelings of not doing or having that.
For example, if you dress up and put intricate makeup because it makes you feel good, it's fine. But when you start putting intricate makeup because you feel bad, unappealing or inadequate for not doing it (and those feelings push out the good feelings of doing that), then it has become an obsession.
With relationships it's a similar rule- wanting to be with someone because it makes you feel good is good, but if you simply start focusing on how bad it is not having them/not spending time with them, then it's getting unhealthy.

When anything impacts us, we have feelings about that impact. We have no control over our feelings, but we do have control over how we act on those feelings.
When we have an obsession, that obsessive thought takes over our life. We find it hard to focus on anything else. It negatively impacts all aspects of our life. School will suffer, friendships will suffer, family interactions will suffer, our priorities will suffer and we end up stuck in one spot with no forward movement.
