If I can be frank, from what you described it seems you don't make them smile at the moment, but you give them advice and support that'll make them smile later, so I'd say that still counts!

Thank you, this image always struck me for the combo of beauty and sadness. I still have a liking for those kind of imagery although I've been moving away from the black and white boudoir style images I used to post. I agree that recognizing and valuing something positive and a quality of that person definitely helps. Even if they dismiss the compliment in many case they appreciate it and feel better.
