Dhanteras Celebration in India - Being a Good Indian

Dhanteras is a festival that marks the beginning of the festival of Diwali, as it falls on the second day from Dhanteras. Dhanteras or Dhana Trayodashi , is a festival on which Indians buy gold and silver jewellery as it is considered an auspicious day to invest in these metals.

The festival falls on the thirteenth lunar day of the dark fortnight, or the Krishna Paksha, in the month of Ashwin, as per the Vikram Samvat Hindu calendar.

The deities which are worshipped on this auspicious festival are Dhanvantari, who is considered as the originator of Ayurveda and the teacher of all the physicians, and Lord Kubera and goddess Lakshmi, the deities of wealth. It is important to be noted that although the festival is celebrated by buying of precious metals and its jewellery, Dhanvantari, the god who is worshipped on the festival is a god of health, rather than wealth. However, lord Kuber and goddess Lakshmi are associated with wealth and it has become a tradition for people to buy gold and silver on Dhanteras.

The historical significance of Dhana Trayodashi

There are three mythological stories that have led to the observation of the auspicious festival of Dhanteras. It is believed that on this day in history, goddess Lakshmi emerged from the ocean of milk with a pot of gold while the sea was being churned. She came out along with lord Kuber. This is why both these deities are worshipped on the festival of Dhanteras.

The Second legend is the one which relates to Dhanvantari, the god of health. It is believed that when gods alongside demons churned Amrita or the elixir of life in an ocean, Dhanvantari appeared carrying a jar-ful of the nectar. Dhanvatari is an incarnation of the lord Vishnu and is the physician of gods. This led to the day being called Dhanteras.

Celebrations :

As the day relates to wealth and prosperity, people decorate their houses' entrance and draw beautiful rangolis. People even renovate their homes and office units to invite the goddess of prosperity and wealth. A lot of people even draw small footprints with rice flour and vermilion (sindoor) powder. This is a representation of goddess Lakshmi entering their abodes.

As mentioned above that many people in India buy precious metals like gold and silver on the auspicious festival, many also think it auspicious to buy utensils made of metal. This is done because Indians think that the buying of metals will be a harbinger of good luck for them.

Also, people perform Lakshmi Puja in the evening where diyas of clay are lit and devotional songs are sung. The diyas are known to drive the evil spirits away and the songs praise the goddess Lakshmi and invite her to their homes. Sweets or naivedya are offered to the goddess. A special kind of parshad that is offered to the goddess, especially in Maharashtra, includes pounded coriander seeds mixed with jaggery.
