This is a tough one that'll test your faith. It's funny i have friend who claims to be a buddhist and he's so adamant about an "all encompassing" god that he literally has tattoed on his arm "No religion has a monopoly on salvation".But yes it's very hard for me to take all of the books of the bible literal ( i. e. it's hard to wrap my mind around a great flood actually happening and noah saving 2 of every animal). But i try to treat it with many books written in antiquity. Most of them did have some basis in fact ( look at the "Illiad and the Odyssey". The Greeks could've written an Epic about a trip to the store. You see what i'm saying.
I'm a Christian and have the Bible as my Holy text. The Bible contains literal scriptures, poetic and metaphoric as well. I read and use my literacy skill context to know when the scripture is literal, poetic or metaphoric. For ex: There's a scripture that says "let all things that have breath praise the lord" obviously not all things that have breath can praise the lord. A fly or roach don't praise God nor can they. The whole purpose of that specific scripture is to command that everyone (humans) should praise God because he is worthy.
I’m not religious, but when I was a catholic I never interpreted it figuratively. I don’t the vast majority of people can live their life literally interpreting their religious beliefs. These individuals manifest themselves as Islamic extremists/terrorists when it comes to the Islamic faith. You have to find some methodology in applying scripture to practicality in reality. I think a tri-mingling of religion, science, and contemporary thought is the way of the future because literalists do not survive in these evolving times. The problem with religion, specifically the big three, is that they are unable to be open for interpretation or alteration to the changing times.
I don't interpret it in any way nowadays, since I'm an atheist, but what's the point in following a certain scripture unless you take it seriously? Like you can't even not take it seriously. If God says you must stone gays to death, then you must do it. If you don't God will get mad at you and will send you to hell. They talk about extremists all the time on TV but fail to include the Bible in the list of scriptures enciting extremism. But people don't actually care about God, and their prayers are figurative. They don't even mean what they say. They assume God is going to forgive them such sins if they pray. Well guess what? God's word is absolute and if he says you will go to hell, then you will.
my GOD speaks the truthso take it literallyBIBLE Do you believe the Rivers of Egypt turned Blood Red? ↗
figuratively, cause if taken litterally, it would be desastrous and horribly evil.
Neither since I became an atheist.
