wanna leave church? just do it... and lose your job, be shunned by your family and peers and fall into a severe live crysis/depression, cause everything that you trusted to be true seems wrong and you struggle with finding a way and meaning to live your live without religion for a long time before you finally cope.this is not a joke that you should downplay so easily. leaving church is a horrible crysis for many people to go through. in most parts of Europe, this isn't "such" a big issue, which i will happily concede but look at specially the south of the USA and it's even way worse in muslim societies. leaving your faith has severe consequences there.
@genericname85 Still not compareable. The church won't threaten, blackmail, and generally terrorize you, let alone actually inflict harm on you. People who left cults have been harmed, even physically. I'm not downplaying it psychological and social pressure behind leaving church in some parts of the US, but that's still a big difference.
no the church won't do that, as in the "organization". but the people as in the "society" or "community" will do that. i left church myself. i know how unproblematic it can be, cause for me it wasn't a problem at all. however for example in muslim countries, all those things you said happen when you leave the muslim religion. and i think being shunned by your pears and having your livelyhood stripped (being fired from your job) are no jokes. i know it doesn't happen to everyone who leaves church but it does happen.
@genericname85 Yes, and that's a major difference - the churche itself won't do anything like that, but in cults, it's the cult leaders who order it, it's an inherent part of the cult's system to terrorize and actually harm people who want to leave or outsiders who critize them openly.Again, I'm not downplaying what you're saying, but the major difference is there and I just explained it. This is not a competition, but there are some inherent differences. And that's what this question was about.
ok but then "some" of the christian churches are cults and some are not. that's the issue. it's not that churches are generally unproblematic. just not all are problematic.
@genericname85 You're reading things into my post that aren't there.
no XD that's just all i wanted to say. i think you agree already anyway so never mind, i guess ^^
@genericname85 No worries.

I disagree with the asking part. A good leader wouldn't demand anything, but they might say you shouldn't touch kids even if you REALLY want to. I think it's fine to say you can't do certain things and hold a position. Like with preaching, if you do something evil openly, or you're an attention-whore you shouldn't preach. I wouldn't let a drunk give my kids a ride to school.
