How do you write about religion without being controversial?

You can always write about religion & in your book you do not have to mention what religion you are writing about & let your readers come up with their own thoughts.

Come to the table with good intentions. If you start with genuinely having a good heart it's actually really easy to talk about it without controversy

You have to right from the viewpoint of love and respect.
There comes a point in your life where you will realise that although you like others and would love for them to join you on your path of righteousness.
That righteousness on in itself can be off putting.
Lead a humble existence. One where you accept others won't listen or feel the word of God.
To accept means you won't force anything, you will talk like you would to a child with passion and care.

How often do you hear a religious person truly care about that one person they could connect with. Doesn't it feel forced.

After politics, business and culture, religion is the biggest driver of the world today. There isn't much controversial about it anymore. It's usually it's followers that are the controversy.

Stick to facts which are universally accepted (most theists can't do this because they can't separate what is their religions idea of 'fact' from actual facts) or clearly identify your opinions and don't try to argue everyone should believe what you do and think like you.

Basically, it's impossible. You cannot accurately report on, talk about, promote, or condemn a religion without pissing off either its followers, non-followers, or both/all. This goes for pretty much anything culture-related.

It takes a writers control, they have to get into a chosen mindset. They can either embrace what they feel or hold it back from their writing for a greater good

There's always going to be someone who thinks it's controversial no matter what. I would say just do your research as much as possible, and try your best to be respectful

Facts only, once you start writing things like "I think" it becomes opinionated and is considered an editorial. That's where it starts to become controversial.
