My husband is a Muslim and has an obviously Muslim surname. I don’t want our kids to have his surname?

My husband’s surname is Ahmed and I don’t want my kids to take it because I don’t want them to run into problems or for it to he assumed that they’re Muslim. I want them to have freedom and become critical thinkers. I don’t want their identity to becoming Islam. Even Muslims don’t really treat other Muslims nicely and are critical if them if they don’t fit their boxed in stereotypes and I don’t want my kids to face all that. I know a name is just a name and shouldn’t matter but I just wish he had a normal family name like mine which identifies my ethnic background and doesn’t relate to any religion directly.

What can I do alternatively?

When you name the children, just give them a different last name. Simple. Go to court if you need to.

Give them a Biblical last name, like "Faith, Hope, or Charity". Those are good first names for a girl, or you could give each of your children a different surname using the name of a Virtue for them. That way they'd all be unique AND not bound to their ancestor's faults and failings.

My last name is "Smith" and it's a pathetic last name.

Well this is definitly somethig you should've discussed before getting married, but i would like to point out that no matter where you are from, it is likely that muslims will no longer be a group that others treat with suspicion as is sadly currently the case in many areas. Additionally, while i don't know what your last name is, I am guessing it probably does denote a certain religious background because not that long ago ethnicity and religion went hand in hand your just used to it and thus don't notice it.

That's a shame. Only thing you can really do speak to your husband about it. I can complete get where you're coming from though. Maybe pick a completely new surname, or have any kids take your name might be a solution if your husband feels the same as you do. Good luck!

You're mentally unstable, and not a very good wife if you cannot talk to your husband about these things.

If your kids decide to be Muslims, then you're going to look like a shitty person for denying them. Also, if you fear discrimination that much, then get the hell out the city or country.

Your "problem" is not with Islam, but culture and lack of family values and your poor parenting.
