*I did this text for a test in my school and I talk about the reality in Brazil; be aware of this when reading
Recently a lot of cases of rape and sexual abuse have been on the media, like the case of a 16 years old girl in Rio de Janeiro that was raped by thirty three men (all adults). It caused a lot of contrary comments, a lot of them saying cliche things like “she asked for it” even thought she was unconscious (the rapists posted videos of her while unconscious), “if she was on church it wouldn't have happened," etc. A case of rape happened in a church not long ago and other comments helping the girl that got the hashtag #EstuproNaoECulpaDaVitima (Rape is not the victims fault) worldwide even Emma Watson used it.
Because of this the expression Rape Culture became known by almost everyone in the country but most of the population thinks it is only rape but it isn’t. It includes blaming the victim, sexual objectification, denial of rape and others. The population denies that it exists even though researches (IPEA) have been done and they show that half of the population believes in a certain way that the victim “asked” for it.
We are used to see things like this because of the sexist society that we live in, because of our last president that was women (Dilma) and had an Impeachment the new government doesn't have any woman or people from different cultures because the new president Michel Temer want it like this. Because of our sexist society rape culture for us is something normal, we live in a society that dont take rape seriously.
(the girls in the pic are my friends I am so proud of them)
the paper say “to be a women without fearing” and the word Temer= fear is about the president- his name
All of this is taught to the kids, one example of this is the sexual objectification of women on TV, commercials and magazines giving the impression that this is normal and nothing need to be changed. But how should we do that?
This isn't only a problem here in Brazil but it is one of the biggest problems here, the country will not advance if there is no equality. The government should be the first thing to change, welcoming women to be part of the decisions of our country, and this government should give more attention to the fact that 15 women die everyday just because they are women. The media is one of the biggest influencers of the public and it should show that they are against actions against equality and show the importance of women in our society. The education (schools) public and private should discuss this kind of subjects with the kids/teens because in some years they are going to be citizens that can help making a better country.
This is the research I was talking about, it is in portuguese:
