I loved Halloween when I was a kid. I always wondered why people saw this "holiday" as more of a boy thing; girls LOVE to play dress-up, right? I guess maybe because girls aren't supposed to like dressing up as horrifying things...? Well, I dressed up one year as a ballerina and the next as a mummy (damn was I hot) and the next as a werewolf, so I guess I wasn't your standard girly girl when I was younger. ;)
Of course, it was really all about the candy. These idiot teachers and parents who don't allow kids to dress up for Halloween in schools apparently don't get this: It's CANDY. It's nothing else. The kids aren't going to perform a ritualistic sacrifice in their backyards when they get home, I promise. And any other bizarre thoughts about paganism or religion or anything like that were PUT in their minds by...yep, the parents and teachers. Morons, all.
But anyway, I digress. My point is that Halloween was pretty much exclusively for kids when I was younger. I know some adults held Halloween parties but frankly, they were pretty rare and just about everything about Halloween was marketed toward teens and children. Something has happened in the past few decades, though; something that makes me wonder if Halloween is yet another day where adults have ANOTHER excuse to engage in bad behavior. We Americans can fu** up any holiday - even the ones that are supposed to mean something - by drinking and acting like fools.
In the case of Halloween, I think it's all about sex for adults now. It's just women trying to wear the sluttiest costume they can find and men going to parties simply to ogle those costumes. I should note that men never seem to wear any such costume; I think it's just accepted these days that the girls have to show as much skin as possible, and give themselves to any guy in a five dollar vampire mask. I guess we could be optimistic about this, though, and say it offers consenting adults a chance to engage in sexual role-playing to spice things up. Nothing wrong with that, whether you're involved in a relationship or not.
I know there are lots of people who still like the scary part of Halloween, but it seems to be running a distant second to the overtly sexual overtones this day/night has now. I went to a Halloween party last year and it was honestly the closest thing to an orgy I've ever been to. Pretty soon, we'll find a way to turn Labor Day into an orgy, too, I guess. 'sigh' But like I said, sexual role-playing can be pretty fun (when taken in moderation) and while I don't think it needs to be quite so PUBLIC, it is a new...angle for Halloween.
Any adults out there looking to get down and dirty this Halloween? C'mon, be honest. ;) My boyfriend has suggested that I dress up and get all sexy this Halloween; of course, it's just for the two of us (mostly), but he does want me to wear it to another party. I asked him what HE'D be wearing and he looked all innocent and replied, "Does it matter?" See, that's what I mean. Maybe it's time for the guys to get in on the fun this year; maybe they should try showing some skin, or something. I thought we were all supposed to be equals in the game of sexual attraction, so I should be allowed to see plenty of man candy, yes?
