Sexting: It's No Joke, It's a Crime For Minors

Sexting: It's No Joke, It's a Crime For Minors

Sexting is sending, receiving, or forwarding sexually explicit messages, photographs or images, primarily between mobile phones. It may also include the use of a computer or any digital device.

While it is considered as the production of child pornography across the US if you are under 18, It is getting a bit common. A study conducted by Drexel University in northeast area of US shows unbelievable results. Some of the data:

NOTABLE FIGURES:
1) More than half of respondents (54 percent) reported sexting as minors. However, only 28 percent sent photographic sexts.

2) The majority of respondents (61 percent) were not aware that sending texts could be considered child pornography

3) In the study, 59 percent of respondents reported that knowledge of legal consequences “would have” or “probably would have” deterred them from sexting.

4) Although participants generally reported experiencing few negative social or legal consequences as a result of sexting, 71 percent reported knowing other teens who experienced negative consequences.

5) Only 2 percent of respondents reported that they notified a parent or teacher about a sext that they received.

If you see the statistics, it is shocking. New researchers also conclude that sexting is becoming a part of adolescence. It might be common but that doesn't make sexting legal for minors. There is a possibility that if you share nudes, it might get leaked and cause tons of consequences with hella depression.

If you’re under the age of 18, it’s especially important for you to know that sharing nude or sexually explicit images of minors on the web, on mobile phones, by mail or any other way is illegal in most countries and could have serious legal and life-changing consequences for both the creator of the images and anyone who requests them.

The safest thing you can do is never send nude photos or anything else you wouldn’t want other people seeing to anyone, even if you feel very close to the person asking for them. If someone you care about asks you to send a nude photo for a private web chat and you don’t want to, tell the person that it makes you feel uncomfortable. Nobody who loves or respects you will pressure or threaten you. If anyone tries to threaten or intimidate you into sending photos, just refuse. If it continues, tell someone you trust or contact your local law enforcement.

For parents

A recent research found out that sexting may be the new “normal” part of adolescent sexual development and is not strictly limited to at-risk teens. i.e even if your child isn't consuming drugs etc that doesn't mean he isn't connected to this. You should take a look at embedded link. I do accept that everyone has freedom to do anything they want but doing this may change your child's future.

  • It is a by-product of the 'Social Age'. one defined by the anti-social aspects it fosters. Many of them lurid and perverted. Made worse for they are so hard to control or govern. For every and any kid has access to cell phones allowing this to be rampant. as well as leading to many undesirable and often tragic circumstances.

I am glad i grew up in a different age away from this cesspool of depravity. where anything sexual was real. Rather than cloaked by a facade of reality

    • thank you for the mho

  • Haha. I laughed at the title of this my take. It wouldn't matter if you point it out or not. Teens are smarter than you think, they know what they are doing and whether or not they are going too far.(half to most of the time it depends on them)

    • Teens are smarter than I think? I'm a teen too -.- yeah I agree it depends upon them but something is better than nothing :)

    • Uh huh. I've been trying to set an example but they won't listen.

  • I think that calling sexting between two mature teenagers is ludicrous.

But honestly, with everything being construed as a sex crime nowadays, perhaps it's the best thing for everyone...

  • I used to sext my exes. Believe me, a relationship without a little bit of it is impossible however we created a limit to it as well.

They constantly asked for my nudes but I'm glad I never sent them.

  • Of course it's normal. And I'm well aware it's illegal.

What's absurd is that it's legal for a pair of 16 year olds to have sex, but not to send explicit messages to one another. Sure, there are some risks to sexting (beyond legal, mainly social embarrassment) but I'm pretty sure the STD and pregnancy risks are zero.

The laws are ridiculous, and like most ridiculous laws, widely ignored.

  • It's a ridiculous and a largely non-enforceable law.
Everyone knows minors are sexual, even more so than adults (because puberty) you can't prevent it and trying to do so is a waste of everyone's time and resources.
All minors need is proper sex ed, not this sexually conservative autism.

  • Just texting is not illegal. Only when there is a picture of genitalia of a minor would it be considered illegal.

  • That's stupid, are we really like Saudi Arabia?

    • With this topic, government is

    • Then we need a new type of government

    • I feel violated when a guy sends me a nude.

  • Here we go with the right wingers who hate Muslims but want to bring Christian shariah law to America

    • I don't hate Muslims nor I'm right winger. This is American law itself.

    • I'm not referring to you I'm just saying American right wingers claim to hate Muslims yet they want to being shariah law Christian style here

    • Inshallah, white sharia is coming. We shall cover every whore's head with a niqab.

    • Show All
  • I did sext when I was 23 and was caught by my bro.. f*** it I wish the latter wouldn't happen.. but it did.. I chose not to care about it, anyway..

  • Sexting represents some serious consequences

  • Unless there's an adult sexting a minor I don't think most people will care. It may be illegal for two 16 year olds to sext each other but the government isn't going to enforce it unless one of the parents who catches the kids really pushes for it and even then it'll probably just be a slap on the wrist.
