The Stranglers Non-Album Singles and B-Sides Part I (1977-1978)

And now it's time for the Singles, B-Sides and also some demos and outtakes. You can find the Album Reviews here

1) Peasant In The Big Shitty (Live At 'The Nashville, 10 Dec 1976) From the bonus 7" from Rattus Norvegicus IV album (1977) 3/5

An early recorded version of this song, but it's mediocre compared to the Studio version of No More Heroes.

2) Choosey Susie (B-Side Of the Live Version Of Peasant In The Big Shitty) (1977) 2.5/5

Just passable. Glad it didn't make it in the album.

3) Go Buddy Go from the double A-Side Peaches (1977) 2.5/5

Guess Non-Album singles weren't their Forte.

4) Straighten Out from the double A-Side Something Better Change (1977) 3/5

Just another mediocre song, but the music video was great. It was the first music video of theirs.

5) 5 Minutes 7" single (1978) 3.5/5

Finally their singles started to become better. This single was the bridge between No More Heroes and Black & White. The A-Side was more No More Heroes and the B-Side was more Black & White (see below).

6) Rok It To The Moon B-Side from the single 5 Minutes 4.5/5

A great B-Side, love these quirky keyboards. It was the predecessor of the album Black & White.

7) Walk On By from the bonus 7" with the album Black & White (1978) 4.5/5

Excellent cover and way better than the original by Dionne Warwick.

8. Mean To Me B-Side from Walk On By (Bonus 7")(1978) 2.5/5

If it was a minute longer or so, it would be better.

9) Tits B-Side from Walk On By (Bonus 7") 3.5/5

Pretty good. I think it was recorded during their early days when they were playing Pub Rock.

10) Shut Up B-Side from the single Nice 'N Sleazy (1978) 1/5

1 minute of crap. That's it.

11) Old Codger B-Side from Walk On By (the independent single version) 3.5/5

A different version of the Walk On By single, was featuring a different B-Side. A nice Pub Rock song featuring George Melly on vocals.

12) Sverige single (1978) 4.5/5

The Swedish version of their song Sweden. Nothing different musically.

Overall 3/5

Their first bunch of non-album songs was mediocre compared to their albums. Too bad.
