Metallica's Controversial Musical Experimentation

First off, let me say that what this myTake is labeled as(sexual behavior), i think its due to what i say about an album artwork. I kept changing the category to to Entertainment and Arts but it keeps changing back to this. Maybe eventually itll change to what I want it to be after this is reviewed.

So in this myTake, I wanted to acknowledge the top 3 Metallica albums that I find to get most complaints about: Load, Reload, and St. Anger. There are still some people who are into all or most of these albums though. All of you are entitled to you opinions about the albums, but don't go bashing opposing views on me as some people have before man..

OK, the Load album. First off, that album cover... *facepalm*

Metallica's Controversial Musical Experimentation

I'm not doing the facepalm because of what this looks like. To be honest I always thought it looked pretty cool, but its what the picture actually is that makes us hear the record needle scratch in awkwardness. If you don't know what it is, well, its semen and blood. It isn't from any of the guys in the band, this picture came from a book Kirk Hammett owned called "Body and Soul" which was filled with weird art like this. The artist (Andres Serrano) supposedly made some art that was controversial, such as one that kirk himself explained in a video (attached further down on this myTake) of Serrano putting a crucifix in a vat of urine and calling the picture "Piss Christ". Don't think thought that this album name has to do with the picture, it actually wasn't an intended pun. For more of an explanation of what the band's thoughts and Ideas were about this album, watch the video below.

I will say though that one of the things that I do actually consider stupid that was said here was Lars saying that Load is heavier than the Black album. When I first heard that I literally started to laugh cause I couldn't believe what I heard. And yeah yeahh I'm sure some of you will point out the kiss between Kirk and Lars at the end, for some reason they had a phase of acting gay during this Metallica era.

Before Load ever came to be, the Black album was the current thing. It had slower music, but was still heavy and bad ass. Once Load was created, it was quite different. It was still surely slower than music in even earlier years such as Kill 'em All, but Load was a little less heavy than the Black album. It has the influences of blues and southern rock within. The track list on Load is:

1. "Ain't My Bitch"

2. "2 X 4"

3. The House That Jack Built"

4. "Until It Sleeps"

5. "King Nothing"

6. "Hero of the Day"

7. "Bleeding Me"

8. "Cure"

9. "Poor Twisted Me"

10. "Wasting My Hate

11. "Mama Said"

12. "Thorn Within"

13. "Ronnie"

14. "The Outlaw Torn"

The band's look had obviously changed too. Everyone cut their hair and changed clothing styles (most of them did). Kirk got tattoos and piercings, and started wearing eyeliner and black nails.

The use of the wah pedal seemed to stand out even more in this album (to me), such as in "2X4". It is surely used heavily in that one. Its one of the songs I like that's on the album. "Mama Said" is truly different than any heavy Metallica song. Its a country rock song they created that has to do with a boy trying to live life without his mother. This is a thing James Hetfield dealt with when his mother passed away from cancer when he was 16. Before it, they already had a difficult relationship. Music at times can affect how I feel, and that song truly has a lot of emotion infused into it, to the point where I really cannot listen to it without fighting any tears. Other songs on there, such as "Ain't My Bitch", "2X4", "King Nothing" and "Cure" I think are pretty bad ass. I don't really mean bad ass in a heavy metal sense, but a hard rock sense. I mean I do hear some elements of metal still, such as in "The House Jack Built" (before the song starts sounding more upbeat) but its less metal than the albums before it.

Reload was a continuation of Load, they were both supposed to be one album. But the band's deadline came before they could have all the music in one thing, so all the music had to be put into separate albums.

Metallica's Controversial Musical Experimentation

The album art for this one is of piss and blood this time. I actually don't know if the picture came from the same artist as the other one, but I have the feeling it did, its got a similar thing to each other.

The track list on this one is:

1."Fuel"

2. "The Memory Remains" (featuring Marianne Faithfull)

3."Devil's Dance"

4."The Unforgiven II"

5. "Better than You"

6."Slither"

7. "Carpe Diem Baby"

8. "Bad Seed"

9."Where the Wild Things Are"

10. "Prince Charming"

11. "Low Man's Lyric"

12."Attitude"

13. "Fixxxer

Some people say that this album was heavier than the last one. I think that certain songs are, such as "Fuel" and "Better Than You". Most of the other ones still got that Load thing to it. Obviously the album art has a similarity to Load too. Reload also comes with a song similar to "Mama Said", which is "Low Man's Lyric". Really this one is more depressing than the other, again, one I try staying away from. "The Unforgiven II" as you can tell is like a second version of "The Unforgiven" on Black, and this trend continued on into Death Magnetic. There's even been a theory that "Here Comes Revenge" on "Hardwired... To Self-Destruct" is still a continuation with a different name. The band's look didn't really change, since this was released shortly after Load.

In 2003, Metallica broke away from the Load era sound and created St. Anger.

Metallica's Controversial Musical Experimentation

This one stirred up a lot of trouble within each of the band members. James was dealing with getting over alcoholism, and all the bandmembers kept arguing over stuff with music and other things going on in their life. It was almost a miracle that they didn't split. But with the music they made, they wanted to make music having to do with the hard things they've dealt with, and clearly experimented production wise. Many people think that the snare used here sounds like a garbage can lid. Kirk grew his hair back, James started to for a short time. But they grew away from the Load era look in other ways. Jason Newsted left the band and Robert Trujillo joined. Bob Rock was a temporary replacement before Trujillo came along. The track list in this album is:

1."Frantic"

2. "St. Anger"

3. "Some Kind of Monster"

4. "Dirty Window"

5. "Invisible Kid"

6. "My World"

7. "Shoot Me Again"

8. "Sweet Amber"

9. "The Unnamed Feeling"

10. "Purify"

11. "All Within My Hands"

Vocal style is also used a little differently. Like "...And Justice For All", they put in some songs that are pretty long. In "The Unnamed Feeling" there's a part in the guitar playing that kinda reminds me of early Slipknot. Really "Frantic" was a song that helped pull me out of hard times. Especially current times, as I have been dealing with depression but music has been helping me get out of it. The first song I ever heard from this one was "St. Anger" itself, but I hated it. It starts off bad ass, but then I'm like "uhh" when the vocals come in. However the first one I found to really like was this (yes this is the short version):

As of right now the only songs I like are "Frantic", "Some Kind Of Monster", and MAYBE "The Unnamed Feeling" though I'm picky with vocals on it.

Really in my opinion, out of all these albums, I'm into Load the most. St. Anger I'm pretty picky with. Reload has its good songs too however. Plenty of people hated in the 90s and even now how Metallica changed, but I never considered it a bad thing for the band to go a different direction, because in some cases its not always too good to constantly sound the same. They're surely not thrash metal anymore, but its good to explore different variations of music. Even with St.Anger, though its one I'm least crazy about, I respect the meaning behind it all, from what Metallica was dealing with at the time.

  • I love Metallica and Load is actually probably my favourite album of theirs~ the only one I don't like is "Lulu". I'm surprised you didn't include that on your list :P

St. Anger and Re-load I enjoy as well, but they're not in my top 3 :)

    My favourite Metallica songs are
    1) The house that jack built
    2) The unforgiven III
    3) Sad but True
    4) Enter Sandman
    5) For whom the bell tolls
    6) No leaf clover

In all honesty, I don't think i've heard a truly 'bad' song by them! <3

    • awesome! its so rare for me to find someone who's into Load too lol. pretty much all those songs you mentioned I love as well XD

    • and you are right, I should've included Lulu in the list, I always forget about that album lol

    • Thanks for the MHO :) That's ok, I think a lot of people forget about it, but i guess it's not a true Metallica Album?

What Girls & Guys Said

  • Yeah I miss the heaviness and depth of raw, shadowy metal that Metallica used to produce. But this is alright, they are in a different place now. They have different lives and I still like most of their songs. Although I didn't enjoy St. Anger very much.

    • yeah St. Anger is a bit weird O. o I'm very into nearly all the albums, but I do agree that they were surely raw and heavy in early years

  • I lost interest after the Black Album. They just got too money hungry and prissy. Those two things alone wouldn't have been too bad if their music didn't start to suck around that period.

I think what really got to me was that Metallica went mainstream. I felt like they sold out. When they're playing your tracks on a Top 40 radio station, you're making music that sells, not music that speaks to people. I have no use for them anymore.

    • yeah I get your view on that. A lot of people tend to see Metallica like that. by the way one of my favorite albums is the Black album.

  • Why does it look like bloody cum?

    • cause that's what it is really

    • Are you being serious?

    • 100%. an artist mixed blood and cum together, put it in a petri dish (I think) and took a picture. when I was little I thought it was lava

  • Metallica will always be one of my favorite bands because I listened to them a lot growing up. I think Load and Reload were really good albums, although I much prefer the older ones. I love Hardwired too because it's heavy, like their old thrash metal sound again.

I think St. Anger has some really good songs, although I didn't really like the way it was recorded/the audio quality. "The Unnamed Feeling" is my favorite track because I can so relate to it!

I've also seen them live a few times (all the way in the front in the mosh pit) and they're AWESOME live.

    • awesome XD yeah St. Anger did have strange audio quality. its probably a partial reason why that album is a slight turn off for me. though I can say I do like a few songs from it myself XD I pretty much feel the same as you do when it comes to all their other albums. I was really impressed when hardwired came out. I mean the first song I heard was "moth into flame" which I thought sounded like it could've been on death magnetic. but then I heard the rest and I was like WOAH XD

  • I think that St. Anger really is quite crappy, but I don't get the hate on Load and Reload. Sure, it's different from their '80s work, but that isn't a bad thing per se and there are some amazing songs, some I think among Metallica's best.
For example, I believe that The Unforgiven II is even better that The Unforgiven from the Black Album. I find it more interesting musically and having a deeper message.

    • i agree with ya man. for a long time the only songs i knew from both albums were "aint my bitch" and "fuel" but earlier this year i got both albums on CD and when i heard everything else i thought "why did everyone hate this?"

  • I saw them this year in jersey, they were awesome

    • awesome. they came to my state July 9th but I couldn't go. I tried winning tickets in a radio concert but had no luck.

    • How come, money? I would save just in case because I didn't even know they were coming until a friend invited me

    • yeah I could barely afford it, they played in suntrust park. a baseball stadium where not long after they opened, metallica was the first band to perform there. but yeah I'm gonna try to keep more money aside in case of any other concerts I want to go to

  • sadly they lost their bite. their new albums aren't that good anymore :(

    • tbh I'm into the new albums (picky with Death Magnetic) but I do agree that they're not the same as like the early years.

    • well yeah they are still good by todays metal band standards... but by "metallica" standards they suck. did you try hardwired to self destruct? their newest album.

    • yeah I actually have a copy of it. Its pretty kick ass (at least that's what I think) one of my favorite songs from it is "Murder One"

  • Coolsville

    • thank ya XD

  • Load, Reload and St Anger were the low points in Metallica's career. Even the band will tell you that. My favorite Metallica album is their live album S&M. It has everything and orchestra complements their music nicely...

    • I had a copy of that CD in my hands once.. but I put it back on the CD rack in the store. big regret.

  • Master of Puppets is where it's at! I never read too much into the media bs surrounding someone's music. Hetfield used to make great music.

    • I've got a copy of Master of Puppets. Love it XD

  • @themetalhead and "Turn the page"

    https://youtu.be/Wewz7dYVKl8
    • ah I've seen that video before. That song is on the "Garage Inc." album I have a copy of it.
