Why you should wait to have sex in a relationship!

There is much debate about how long you should wait before you have sex with a guy. Should you wait a week? a month? a few months? or just go on the first date? Here is my opinion as to why you should hold out.

Why you should wait to have sex in a relationship!

I am not a prude that argues you should keep your legs closed until marriage. Usually, I am quite the opposite and think if the first date is going well you should just go for it. However, it is not that simple. I have usually found that if you do sleep with a guy on the first date you are more likely to get a callback and a second or third date and an offer of a relationship but it's not as successful as it seems.

When you have sex with a man oxytocin is released into his body. This is not just in sex, it also occurs when intimate contact is made. This boosts the males' attraction to his mate and makes him less likely to be interested in other women. So after that first date when you've slept together, yes, he cannot get you out of his mind, but not because you are perfect for him but because he's high on hormones.

Oxytocin was found to also have other, powerful effects on the brain. Under the influence of this hormone two areas of the brain lit up when they saw their partners face. This area of the brain gave the person feelings of pleasure and happiness. When they saw other potential mates it did the exact opposite and suppressed these feelings leaving the man to be more disinterested in other women. Oxytocin in women is continued to be released after orgasm which is why women like to cuddle after.

Another hormone release is dopamine. Dopamine is released on orgasm and ignites the body's reward system. So, therefore, if your partner makes you orgasm your body rewards itself. This works for both males and females.

Other than these two hormones another also become active within the body before, during and after sex.

Serotonin- High levels are released into the brain of both men and women during sex. Serotonin is an antidepressant and stabilizes your mood making you happier.

During and after sex your brain goes through many things. The lateral orbitofrontal cortex (the logical part of the brain becomes less active) becomes less active during sex. Your body closes this down as this area is responsible for fear and anxiety which can disrupt arousal and intercourse.

The release of these hormones makes us less sensitive to pain which is why things that would hurt day-to-day such as a slap or getting hair pulled doesn't hurt in sex.

If you look at the scientific part of sex we can understand a little more what actually occurs between two people. With all this going on it can cloud our judgement a little. This happens more so in men than women. If you sleep with a guy on the first date no wonder his curiosity is peaked. It's like a drug he keeps chasing, which is why he will keep on coming back.

What happens in the relationship though? So you had great sex and you both let your hormones choose your mate. At first, this works because you cannot keep your hands off each other. The hormones remain because you are having sex regularly but once that sex starts to fade so do the bonds. This leads one or both of you to look elsewhere to find that bond and fix. Since you were intoxicated the first time you had sex and didn't really get to know each other you may find you both have nothing in common or that you are not really that attracted to the person. You could be months or even years into your relationship and find out you are incompatible! You may think "I've had sex on the first date and he's stuck around" but now you know why he did. So to conclude if you want a relationship it could be better to wait.

  • Very good MyTake! I completely agree with you. I always recommend waiting a while (maybe a few months/several dates) before starting sex exactly because I think if you want a long term relationship that will last, you have to establish the emotional connection and compatibility for non-sexual aspects of a relationship first before starting sex because, just as you said, if you start sex first that will become the basis of the relationship and it will be difficult to know about those other things that are very important to keeping a relationship going long term.

Also, I think that what you described is also why it's important to keep sex as part of a relationship after the initial "honeymoon phase" is over. The bonding and positive feelings that come from a good sex life helps keep the relationship strong even when the inevitable rough spots occur in other areas.

So basically, don't start too soon but after you've started, don't stop. Becoming less frequent is fine (because most people can't keep up the pace of the early stages of a relationship long term), but it should never become infrequent or non-existent.

  • This is the scientific proof that my parents taught me, don't sleep with someone before you are close with them because it bonds you really close together and it can be heard breaking if its not the right fit... Great my take! You have confirmed my parents theory! :)

    • I thought sleeping with someone on the first date was fine! But then if I actually analyse all my relationships the science explains a lot

    • *heart breaking... Autocorrect :) and yet it's a different prospective

  • I like your take but half the people are dating strictly for sex, sad as it sounds, so nothing is going to deter them. Good girls who are not into casual sex or abide by the 3 date rule will be waiting to see if the guy is interested enough in her to stick around. If he is just in it for sex he will drop you. Some girls think sex is no big deal and they are most likely to get pregnant and get abortions so they are free to continue in their ways of hopping from bed to bed. In the end it is each girl's decisions. A lot won't make the right decisions because they are horny and want sex, one way or the other. Maybe they have too much free time on their hands? Who knows.

  • As everyone should know, it's just lust the first night but if it turns into something that's alright.
And i would say it don't really matter, if you were meant for each other and really like each other sex sooner than later really shouldn't change that outcome of you 2 getting along and becoming a thing.

  • I typically say a relationship needs meet four requirements. before I'll consider having sex with a new girl I have been dating.

    1. we have been dating for at least 90 days.
    2. we are an exclusive couple.
    3. we both have STD testing done to prove were both clean.
    4. she has a low overall sexual partner count. not just relationships and counting both guys/girls. if its double digits or higher then no thank you.

I am not into hookup culture or one night stands.

  • Naah!! I shouldn't😂

It will be like eating without drinking water.

  • dude sex is sex no matter what.

having it in a relationship does not justify or glorifying anything. I myself have never experience that hormone logic that you're trying to explain and even if this was true this does not mean BOOM! the guy is gonna commit to you and you two are gonna live happily ever after. there's lots of dudes out there who just want to hit and run regardless their hormone patterns.

like wtf? you are seriously trying to justify relationships as being some sort of biological act and this is not true. sex itself is a biological act, relationships are not. no different than eating and dieting. eating is biological because we are obviously program to eat anything when we are hungry, whether you want to eat something healthy in the other hand is up to you; which concludes that you really can't get those two mixed up. sex and relationships are again not so different

    • See I have always been if I want to do it do it! Always thought no first date sex was BS. I thought none of it applied to me even knowing this stuff! But I look at my past relationships and it’s true, they fizzle very quickly. Think it’s because we based out relationship on sex

  • I too would like to wait on sex. But every time I did I got friend zoned. Every single time.

    • This happened to me too. I found that the longer I waited for sex with a woman the more likely I was to be friend-zoned. The faster we had sex the more likely they were to want to keep dating me. I have two theories as to why this is, and it's kind of a question of "which came first: the chicken or the egg?" 1) Sex causes bonding, as she rightly mentions in the take. Without sex, the bond isn't as close. The girl's initial attraction to you fizzles out after dating for a long time without sex, especially in today's dating scene. or 2) When a woman is strongly attracted to you from the get-go, she naturally wants to have sex with you quite quickly. Even if she'd usually make other guys wait - guys she's not as strongly attracted to. Because she's strongly attracted to you she's willing to break the rules she usually makes. If she's making you wait, maybe you're the guy she's not as strongly attracted to, and that's why you get friend-zoned. It's one or the other. Either way, the advice in this take is great for women who are trying to avoid players, but not so great for men trying to avoid the friend-zone.

    • @Barbaric it sucks I had to find out the hard way. There were some women I really wanted to build a decent connection with. Yes a man can say that and not be a pussy. I thought it would make the sex that make more rewarding and real. But I’m ever relationship I’ve been I had sex with the girl within 3 dates. I’ve been in 4 long term relationships in my life.

    • Point being if women want to avoid fuckboys then they have to realize they are at least half the problem those guys exist. They reward them. I know because I was briefly one myself.

    • Show All
  • I had my 1st one night stand the other night. It was a terrible decision. I always knew it was better to wait. And now I still the feel the same way.

  • Read almost halfway through and here's your first mistake.

Sex on first date = Hookup AKA one night stand. No normal man considers that girlfriend material because she could have slept with all the previous 100 men before him on the first date too (promiscuity). Who wants that as a girlfriend? Women are the locks and we are the keys. So make sure you open to the right keys and not too soon.

  • I am willing to be in a very long term relationship, but getting me to have sex is going to be the biggest battle that she could be in to get me to do even if we wait until marriage because of things that have happened to me in the past?

  • Yes till you feel right anyone can fake normal but not for long always take your time better safe than sorry.

  • So yes on the first date or no? 😕

    • Depends what you’re looking for! If you want something serious it’s probably best you hold out so nothing clouds your judgement

    • I usually wait until it feels right.

  • If you can get it on a first date get it!! You never know when your have the best sex ever or your next spouse or BOTH!!!

  • Yes, I totally agree, and would live by that rule. If you are looking for a serious, long term relationship, hold of the sex until you are mentally connected. Then connect with each other physically. Sex does play mind games. It's like a drug, you always get that burst of great feelings. And you forget about the communication part.

  • To Answer Your Question, Why Not?

  • That's a million dollar question. I could provide answers for both ends of the spectrum in this debate. I've plenty of experience but can't find a suitable position.

  • I didn't always.

    • U females r whores

  • I actually dont like it when a girl wants to sleep on the first date. I only like being sexual with people I know really well

  • making sex wait in a relationship is ur call... it has nothing to do with the relationship. I've experienced and seen situation, where the partners were extremely active sexually but no relationship norms... also have seen that there was a very strong sexual relationship - but sex did not exists...

so i think both are just not relevant... if the couple wants to have sex, they should just go ahead and have it.

    p. s. i had sex on the first date.

  • I think there should be no rules I think if you both are craving each other then why ruin a good thing! Others boundaries are always respected though
