And it's a possibility that it may or may not be accidental. When kissing my girlfriend's neck and chest I get a little too into it and begin sucking a bit but stop myself before it becomes a hickey. I do desire it a bit but never really knew why. Perhaps it's a way of saying "look at this world, I've left my mark on this beautiful girl's body!".
Some guys think they have to 'mark their territory', like wild animals. But guys aren't going to piss on you to do that, so instead, they give you hickeys.
A lot of guys are pretty primitive; they think it's manly to be primitive.
He's imprinting you as his own or he has watched too many twilight sequels...
Same reason I used to give them to guys...

Hickeys however are gross. I'd let him know that tounge-work should be done without leaving hickeys.

and probably have no interest in other suitors
and suitors know they might be rebuffed by you or in trouble w/BF
Nop! He just doesn't know how embarrassing it can be or if he does, he doesn't care.
