Honestly, no a male doesn't need to have a boner. Horny is the feeling of wanting sexual thoughts or physical touching.

They usually have a boner from physical touching or a sexy mental image. But the blood that rushes to the penis constantly moves, so the boner kind of hardens and softens if the touching or image stops (think of those like fuel)
