Why do some women think that guys have more privileges than they do?

This girl asked this question on here and this other guy agreed with her too. I don't believe this is true cause males and females at least in western countries both still have certain privileges the other gender doesn't have. But first lets list all the privileges males and females have both can be doctors, nurses, engineers, astronauts, play any sports, etc and a women can get paid more than a man women don't always get paid less they can get raises just like men can. They can drive, wear what they want both have to abide by the rules. Disadvantages for males- Us males if we are in danger we are less likely to be helped they have done countless of social experiments on this and when the roles were reversed plenty of strangers came to the female's rescue way more often than they did for a man males and females came to the female victims rescue. We get less empathy from others, more likely to be seen as creeps and have bad assumptions made about us, and gay man get bashed more than gay females. Okay now the females turn (disadvantages for females)- They get slut shamed especially by other females, get paid less, but not always like I stated earlier, they are more likely to get raped, and seen as sexual objects which can hurt them. Male advantages- Don't get raped or at least its very rare, don't get sexually harassed as much as women, Usually get paid more than women, and are more likely to be in a relationship with someone good looking even if they are ugly than women are. Female (advantages)- Get protected more physically and verbally, can get away with wearing guy clothes, if she is pretty could marry a rich guy and take him for his money, can hit a man and it can be seen as socially okay.

  • Just some thoughts - women have to maintain a very difficult standard of looks in mainstream U. S. society while also proving themselves able to be taken seriously by what are considered male standards of leadership behavior etc. (ironically these two things often seem at odds to me). Women are treated fairly equally but still are left with burdens such as greater danger (rape, a culture of sexual harassment or at least a feeling of entitlement - see "the male gaze") and economic burdens like single motherhood.
I, thank God, have always felt taken seriously and rarely face harassment but I also don't necessarily conform to societal ideas of how a woman should dress or behave, for example in the classroom (women tend to observe, men tend to speak, in college seminars etc. as far as I'm aware). It's subtle but the idea of "sit back and let the men talk" is still there to some degree - women bloggers are often silenced by rape threats especially in male-dominated online communities.
I had a huge argument with a friend over this. He didn't get it. It's hard to understand until you've experienced what it's like as a woman.

(See my "too scary to catcall?" question if you're curious about what I said about harassment.)

By the way before someone says it (and I shouldn't need to say this) - I don't dislike men or think they're all secretly misogynist or whatever. I just think that sometimes they don't understand the extent of how the system benefits them (even the names male/female, man/woman, mankind, imply a "default" in mainstream society, but that's more a curious linguistic artifact).

    • I mentioned all that rape disadvantage stuff though in my comment I understand what you mean about being dominated in the online community and silenced by rape threats, but see I don't see that really being a problem cause your online and when your blogging you don't have to give any information out to anyone so they're safe cause they don't know anything about you exact location wise.

    • Yes - thanks for that! And sometimes people are able to obtain IP addresses and other information - I don't know I've just heard horror stories.

    • Yeah, but that is through like them having their house address or giving them their ip address for whatever reason.

  • Your issues you pointed out or social ideologies. It's not about who is better and who has the upper hand but having a balance. Guys do have more privileges and the fact that you don't see it doesn't mean it doesn't happen other places. I go to school with men who literally think I'm just there to find a husband and I really just need to stay at home and raise kids. They don't see any other option for me. I'm just a potential wife and child bearer.

Women and men are different, but we should be allowed the opportunity to achieve the same thing.

    • You are a hypocrite you just said to me you were pointing out social ideologies which is true I was, but you just did the same thing by talking about how men just see you as someone who should be child bearing and is only looking for a husband. How do women have less privileges? Give examples where legally they are restricted in Western countries.

    • did I say all men? Did I say all men that I go to school with? No I just said men. Blacks aren't legally restricted either however they are restricted socially and culturally. Are the struggles of women an black people in the US the same? No, but you refuse to accept that women do have issues they face. All men are not bad, but that doesn't mean that there are not enough men that discriminate against women. Women also discriminate against women.

    • Obviously you didn't read my details below my question cause I very well did mention the female and male disadvantages. Why are you refusing to see the male disadvantages?

  • The reason some women think this way is because they actually believe that women are superior to men in every way, be it intelligence, creativity, social skills, pretty much anything. Any evidence to the contrary of this is ALWAYS explained by "the patriarchy" or a conspiracy of some sort where men are given the run of society, at the expense of women. For instance men always score higher on standardized tests, the evil patriarchy is designing the tests so women fail. One time women score higher than men, its is irrefutable evidence that girls rule and boys drool!

For instance in science department of major universities most men hold key positions. This is proof that men are actively keeping women from excelling in science, because if given a fair chance women will somehow always outperform men. However in psychology departments where a majority are women, it is simply more proof that girls rule and boys drool. The examples go on and on, basically they claimed over and over to only want "equal treatment" but their actions tell a completely different story.

  • Women actually have more rights and privileges than men in the US today.

  • Mostly because white, middleclass, first world citizen, men and women don't have anything to complain about. So they complain about their right to have rights and how not getting complementary towels at a hotel is oppression.

We're a nation of drama queen bitches.

    • Well said

  • Because men actually do.

  • Because they do.
