I honestly don't know, but when a guy talks about the size of his manhood he usually just says one number, the length. Maybe he thinks length is more visually impressive, but a long skinny doesn't look good, a stubby fat one looks better I'd say. Or maybe they think the important thing about pleasuring a woman is how deep into her vagina they can go? Whereas the vast majority of the pleasure giving nerve endings are at the front of the vagina, and pleasure comes from the penis putting pressure on them. Hence girth > length. So really the focus on length is just due to misconceptions men have about sex. I think both matter to women, I know there's such a thing as too big, but all in all most women prefer them on the thicker and longer side.
