I like the concept behind it but it's not very practical. It wouldn't work for really cold temperatures as the water would just freeze. Also, it isn't very precise and only works for a certain temperature range depending on how many bobbers are inside. And yeah, it does look a little bit like a dildo.
They don't use water in Galileo thermometers, normally ethanol or something similar. So it's not going to freeze unless things get REALLY (freezing point of ethanol is -144 °C) cold. :) But yeah your other points are valid. It's just a cool thing to have, y'know?
Huh, I didn't know that they used ethanol, makes sense though as it's just based off of density changing with temperature - the liquid doesn't matter as much. Wait, if they use ethanol couldn't you just have a drink when you're finished with the thermometer?
Drinking pure ethanol will kill you though! :P
