Did mother/son sexual relationships really exist back in Ancient Greek/ Rome times?

My teacher in philosophy class said that back in ancient times a mother and her son had a sexual relationship and this wasn't seen as taboo like today, it was seen as normal. It was believed that the only way a boy could become a man was to have sex, but not just sex with any woman, the woman need to have the power to make him a man, and the only woman powerful enough to do so was his own mother the same woman that brought him into the world! What are your thoughts on this? It seems extremely taboo nowadays but makes sense when you think about the thought process back in those days.

  • Given the time of history your teacher talked about, and the specific civilizations he mentioned, we have an enormous volume of written historical records. Not to mention multiple instances of different genres of written information that is preserved. We have an extremely well documented level of information concerning both Greek and Roman cultures.

Did incest happen between mothers and sons? Yep. I can promise you it's happened all throughout history, and in EVERY culture that ever existed. However, if it was as common as your teacher is leading your class to believe, he's deluded and totally wrong. If it was a typical rite of manhood as he says, there would be record after record after record of this happening, in multiple instances, across the entire culture (s). Nothing could be further from the truth!

If this is a college class, my guess is your teacher is attempting to insert HIS personal liberal viewpoint on the class to foster a possible bent he has toward incest, rather than present complete fact and truth.

    • Agreed! Your on point 👌🏻

  • This guy is a teacher? In an actual school?

    No.

You can find just about any behavior in humans somewhere (generally some remote tribe) at some time but I don't know of normalized mother son incest. Certainly not in classical Greece or Rome. They had some ideas which would strike us as strange but that's not one of them. In the later pre-Christian period what we would call pedophilia was normalized. Upper class Romans ladies always had sex with at least some clothing on (nudity was the mark of slavery). For the Romans homosexuality was abnormal if the person with higher social status was the one penetrated. Sex for them was about dominance, actually just about everything for them was about dominance.

  • Don't kid yourself, it happens more today than you would think. People just don't talk about it. I had a brief thing with my dad. About a year or so. It was fun. We love each other. No big deal. Now I have friends who had LONG on-going relationships with parents. One friend is a guy, 26, Korean. Said it started with his mom when he was in middle school (13-14) and continued until he graduated college. He went into pretty specific details, but I'll just say that she "took care of his needs" so he could concentrate on schoolwork. He said his dad and sister knew about it and it was actually a common thing in Korea!

Have an older friend who lived with her son for 7 years after her divorce. Her son was 23-30. They lived their lives as a couple both inside the house and out. No one knew she was his mom. He fell in love with another girl and got married. Neither of them have regrets and from the stories they tell, it was a very loving relationship.

  • I study ancient history, with Greece being my priority for my degree :) Sexual relationships between mothers and sons did happen in ancient Greece, the same way they happen in modern times, however it was considered extremely taboo. Incest between close family members was not something that was acceptable and a woman was not to have sex with anyone outside of her husband if she was a citizen woman, her son would not have been allowed. Rome was very similar in these regards, except even moreso, it would not have been considered at all acceptable.

So yeah. Your teacher has no fucking idea what he's talking about.

    • Wow I believe your story more than his! Yours makes more sense, but do u agree that these sexual incest relationships did exist? Not just mom and son but dad and daughter and even brother and sister

    • They did exist, but very rarely. Like I said, relationships like that were treated exactly as they are today. Close family sexual relationships were totally inappropriate and were taboo. Without going into the marriage laws of ancient Greece which will be pretty hard because every city-state had its own set of laws, you can read the myth of Oedipus and Jocasta - they were cursed by the gods for the sin of being mother and son, and they didn't even know that they were. More distant family marriages were a little more common, you would be able to find relationships like uncles and nieces, but you wouldn't generally find a relationship between parent and child or brother and sister and if you did, it wouldn't be legal or treated respectfully. It's exactly the same as modern life, it happens but it's not something anyone approves of :)

    • Agreed, those secrets are never revealed and taken to the grave

  • Lol, yea it did. So did many other things. like men having raping little girls getting them pregnant and forcing abortions on them then throwing them off cliffs when they where done with them. or cutting the balls off little boys so they wouldn't become to manly looking as the grew and raped them , all men where bisexual during those times and stds where high. yea those where some sick people. probably the most sick in human history

  • i've never heard that before. and when you consider the reaction of the queen in the Oedipus plays, I think such a concept might well be news to the greeks too.

such relationships DID happen, but they were not accepted, just as they sometimes still happen today, and are still NOT accepted, with good reason.

  • I feel like binge watching some Game of Thrones now. LOL.

Your teacher is twisting the facts... then again... a lot of college instructors do that in many, many classes.

  • I think it was already taboo then. Which is why Oedipus was the guy in a *tragedy*.

  • Read up on the Oedipal Complex.

  • No wonder the greeks look alike... :P

  • That's weird and disgusting.. what kind of life did they live 😨

  • That's disgusting no matter how ancient your society is.

  • Incest still exists all around the world yes.

  • it seems someone has fantasy here

  • Yes. It was normal back then when the main purpose was reproduce by any means and that time death rate was higher than present. With the fundamentalist cultures and religions of East the morality became more conservative.

  • That's disgusting and stupid.

  • There are many things in ancient time which have no real answer this one also the same, its hard to say 'Yes' or No' but it exist and we have to respect the history. may be son and mother is way too high but the incest still exist.

  • dunno... but as a woman yourself, you most likely wouldn't have any rights and be forced to stay at home all day.. lol.

  • I like the idea. Older women with son

  • Think is possible back then.
Now a days it's not so common I'd imagine. More so brother/sister or sister/sister or cousins

    • Yes I think back then it happened a lot but it was kept in the dark, same as today there has to be at least one family out of a million that does it but we will never know because they take that shit to the grave!

    • Yea I met this girl who told me that when she was 13 her older brother who was 16 came home drunk and made her give him a bj. She said she did it then it happened one more time.
