The goals of feminism (legal equality in every way it's reasonable to have) has been achieved in western cultures - there isn't really a need for any movement or discussion about it at this point. (In may other areas of the world, it's definitely still needed, though).

So, most people who are still talking about feminism are doing so because - in their minds - there is still major work to be done. And the only reason they can believe that is because their ideas of "feminism" are RADICAL feminism - aka FemiNazis.

Keep in mind that RadFems teach 100% of "Women's Studies" and similar classes in college and are the ones making all of the noise. They're extremists and radicals, and since society isn't ever likely to be as radical as they are, they'll never be happy or satisfied.

But most women recognize that feminism has generally achieved its goals, which means there's no need to keep flogging it as if it were still the middle ages. Sure, there are occasional pockets of sexism that still remain, but we ALREADY have laws and guidelines in place to deal with those cases - and they ARE getting dealt with, rather than ignored or swept under the rug.

The real question is... what kind of ignorant people think it's OK to support modern feminism in the western world.

Feminism achieved its goals here a long time ago. Today there is nothing positive left that it can achieve. That's not to say there aren't problems to address, but today more of those issues affect men than women. Feminism says it is for equality for both genders, but its track record clearly shows it harms men far more than it helps them.

Today feminism's impact on society and gender relations is overwhelmingly negative. It follows that the only women who still support feminism ARE feminazis. They just don't realize they are.

The only ignorant people in this issue today are people who still support the sexist ideology known as modern feminism.

We need a movement that ACTUALLY cares about both genders, not one that says it does but only supports women. That is what feminism has always done, and always will. Until more women realize what feminism actually is and stop supporting it, a new movement will never catch on. The truth is the vast majority of people today support gender equality. They just don't support feminism because, despite what it claims, feminism does NOT support equality and never will.

I think what you are getting hung up on, QA, is what feminism used to be versus what it is today. It is not the noble cause it once was, and it never will be again. If you support feminism now, you are supporting what feminism is now, and no one should support that. If you do, shame on you.

Feminism is Feminism, there is no "modern feminism", you are confusing it with feminazism, which is just a sick deviation created by mentally disturbed women.

My experience in the university world is that what calls itself feminism there is what you would call femi-nazism.

Most of what you consider feminism is simply generally accepted by most people I know.

The thing is, you can easily compare feminazis with extreme vegans, who are hostile towards people who eat meat, unlike peaceful vegans - who don't act aggressively towards the omnivores (just like original feminists, who actually don't hate men).

Sure. I'm just saying my real life experience. Which was that most people I know believed in equality. The one woman I knew who wanted to be a feminist activist joined a feminist newspaper. She got frustrated and quit. The rest of them wanted to create a woman-only state within continental North America where males would be expelled at adulthood. Now you can say those are the extremists. And you'd be right. But the area I live in is liberal enough that people who hold moderate views don't self identify as feminists. They just think of themselves as normal and reasonable.

Yeah, you are right, I mean, what were they thinking, a "woman-only state", just like an ancient Amazons? They would extinct very quickly, such women are totally unreasonable.

So the friend of mine did their copy layout for like a couple issues then quit. It was like 5 months till they got another issue out. Because none of them could use a computer. Annnnyway. There's just no clear definition of what feminism means. The sort of feminism pushed by 'organized' feminism is quite extreme. There are also quite a few things they do which suggests they do not believe in equality. More precisely I think they so firmly believe that women are THE oppressed underclass they are happy to screw over men in any way to help women as a way of correcting the balance.

There is a clear definition of feminism, it's: the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes, so they definitely support equality. The problem is in the feminazis, who claim to be feminists, but they are just ruining the reputation of feminism.

Dictionaries don't tell us what words will mean. They are a trailing version of what words meant at the time they were written. Meaning evolves. I'd say that the -real- definition of feminism today -in the west- is a belief that patriarchy is either THE or a major defining feature of our culture, that women are a significantly disadvantaged class, and that significant improvements to women's position relative to men are necessary. People who don't believe that will not be welcome in actual feminist circles.

True Feminists at heart are always like the original Feminists, but the "modern" crap about patriarchy in the west is a deviation created by the Feminazis, who call themselves "Feminists", that's how the reputation of Feminism was ruined by a group of extremists and radicals.

Well, I can claim to feel the same way about 'Liberal'. Classical liberalism is pretty much free market capitalism with civil liberties. The modern word for 'liberal' is quite different. But part of this is actually a mark of success. What many feminists wanted 80 years ago was achieved, is almost universally accepted, and is now just a normal and accepted part of the culture. So traditional feminism didn't vanish, it succeeded and reconnected with the broader culture. But some people said 'no no no we aren't done yet' and so they are pushing further. In their mind, it's part of the same struggle. If I were planted magically in the developing world, I'd probably end up calling myself a feminist. By the standards of a north American university campus, I'm not. The words mean different things because the context is different. Because in so many ways, self identifying as a feminist is a way of indicating a desire for -change- the baseline is critical.

Yeah, the new liberalism is totally over-hyped, I don't understand what's behind their agenda. True, most of the feminist goals are achieved in the west, but not in most of the world (Africa, Middle East, most parts of Asia, some parts of Latin America, Balkans). You ar right, problem of some people is just in their minds, they tend to exaggerate without any valid reason for their rebellious attitude.

Well, I'm trying to hold back from commenting too much on whether they're right or not, just observing that the focus of a movement does change as some goals are met and others abandoned. New people come in and they drive in new directions.

Yeah well, new people often ruin some things, just look at the Star Wars :P
