Why is incest still seen as wrong if the couple doesn't make any children?

I'm just curious and wants your opinions. Even though this is a taboo, I thinks we should still be able to discuss it like other topics like abortion and if drugs should be legalized or not.

1. The couple who does incest doesn't need to make biological children. Either it's a straight couple who've protected sex or the couple is the same sex. Is it still wrong and why?

2. Incest can be either between siblings, cousins etc. But where do the limit go?

3. Incest is in two categories. It's biological incest and socially incest. Biological would say that the couple are in biological family, but socially incest would say that they are in a adoptive family and therefor not in a biological family. So biologically socially incest is no different than doing it with a stranger outside of your family.

If you're Against incest, I would hear other arguments than the children can be deformed. Because not everybody makes biological children and I would like to hear something new.

  • I'm gonna throw out some info I think is important to this discussion, that show there's no good reason for incest between consenting adults to be illegal.

    1) The Westermark Effect is the mechanism in the brain that makes people NOT be attracted to people they grew up with (like family, biological or not). It's effects aren't universal, though, so some people have a weak or nonexistent Westermark Effect.

    2) Biological defects from incestuous couples are greatly exaggerated in our society. Lots of other factors can increase the chances of a genetic defect, such as older parents or existing conditions that the parents may have. We don't prevent older people or people with existing genetic disorders to have kids, so that invalidates this argument. Plus, as said, not everyone has kids, and in fact I'd wager incestuous couples would more often choose not to, because of the risks.

    3) Lots of people like to point to imbalanced power dynamics - like a parent/offspring or uncle/niece, for example - and say that the younger one must be being coerced. However, there's not laws preventing a boss/employee relationship or teacher/student, and those power imbalances can be even greater. Even if it were the case that someone was forced or coerced, there are already laws in place (in the US, at least) to address that (sexual abuse laws would apply here). Plus that implies that an 18-year-old can consent to an orgy with 20 strangers but not to a sexual relationship with an older relative. Doesn't make sense does it?

    4) Most people like to conflate incest with pedophilia, but pedophilia is already illegal (for good reason!). As I've already stated above, there's no good reason for incest to be illegal between consenting adults.

    5) Laws concerning incest vary from place to place, even state to state in the US. Some places second cousin couples are illegal, other places it's fine to be in a relationship with a first cousin. It's all arbitrary.

  • Socially incestuous relationships offer far more potential for grooming and manipulation. The majority of statutory rape cases involve socially incestuous relationships, between a younger family member and an older family member. And this is mostly because the close-knit family environment makes it almost impossible for these relationships not to have some element of manipulation, and of grooming. If you exert the level of control and influence over someone's personal development that someone typically exerts over their child, grandchild, niece, nephew, younger sibling, or even younger cousin's development, then it's difficult to see how such relationships can possibly not be manipulative, not involve some element of grooming, and avoid a dangerously one-sided power dynamic. Does the junior partner in the incestuous relationship truly love the senior partner of their own free will? Or have they instead between brainwashed, groomed or indoctrinated to do so? Especially if they've had been taught by the senior partner since childhood. Even over the age of 18, adults aren't legally allowed to have mentor-mentee sexual relationships- tutors, teachers, lecturers and practitioners aren't allowed to date or have sex with their students or apprentices, under penalty of losing their jobs and/or facing criminal charges. And the vast majority of incestuous relationships can also be categorized as mentor-mentee relationships in the same fashion. Also worth mentioning, the taboo element of incestuous intercourse, the social stigma against it, also means that it's also extremely easy and commonplace for the dominant initiator in such relationships to blackmail the other party into submission. All in all, there are several reasons why incest is seen as being wrong besides the relatively insignificant increased risk of birth defects. What do you think?

    • Yea, it do make sense. Similar thing with polygamy. There's so much complications and that's why it's not recommended many places.

    • The problem is that criminalizing incest means criminalizing situations that could lead to something harmful. Here in the US, in most (if not all) cities/states it's not illegal for a boss/employee or similar relationship to occur (even if most companies have rules against it). Statutory rape would still be illegal and still apply in the cases you mention. Plus, it suggests that an adult is incapable of consenting to a relationship with an older relative - even though they're perfectly capable of consenting to an orgy with 20 strangers.

  • Some believe incest means date your own race. Other think therefor it is better date other races. Many parents and children want family incest. Many do not want it. Many do not want to date other races. What to do about it if it is all not free what we choose to be what we want to be while everybody try to force the other to be what they want them to be and a lot is rape but then again many like rape and this is not a lie. Our government is desperate because of thereof from the people too many different opinions about what they all like. Perhaps we need to make states for every individual person and rule their own life and fight each other when they disagree or cannot come to an agreement. Let's fight. We are proud of our soldiers. So are proud to fight for what we want. Or let's come to agreements or if that is not possible fight again.

  • I find it wrong if they know they are related. You know if they are aware of the fact that they came out of the same womb. (well also if they are half sibling and there mutual parent is their dad, then tecnically they are not from the same womb but still related) - although I can't say that I don't get why some people do it. If they don't feel the platonic-sibling-relation , then, it can happen. I just dont think its right when you know you're related, cause that should turn you off. With adoptive siblings - i think it depends on how long they've been in each others lives cause, if they've been 'siblings' since an early age i don't find it okay - but if they got in the same family when they were teens - they are more like friends that siblings and I think thats okay actually. I hope you think this was an explained answer to why.

    • I guess its they're own choice to make. I don't care - i dont actually think its wrong or not, but I DO think there must have been some sort of wrong turn in the way they were raised to make them feel and think this way.

  • The brainwashing regarding this and all sex started in the dark ages by the Catholic church. They decided all sex was bad except in very strict situations involving propagating the church. People violating their policies were tortured and executed and it has carried down since but with diminishing punishments.
    Love in it's most sincere demonstration is through the sexual bond of those that love each other and in it's natural element is not to be restricted from those that love each other most in the family bond.
    While the brainwashing still runs rampant in society against these most natural and loving unions, the Catholic priests have sex with our children. Go figure that one out.

  • This was just in the news last week. A husband and wife go into for fertility help and it is dicovered that they possess the same DNA. Come to find out they were each other's twin. How do you go from loving someone to them being your sibling. I would think that would be emotionally difficult.

  • Lets look at this as a possible scenario. Single mum has twins. Puts them up for adoption. The kids are adopted by separate families. 25 years later, two people meet up. Date. Become lovers. Get married. Then at age 45 they find out they are siblings.

    Not an impossible scenario.

    Take another scenario, that I've used before. Two people meet and date, and eventually get married. Both people are from one parent families. One has a father, the other has a mother. Father and mother fall in love and marry. That makes the young couple step brother and step sister, as well as being husband and wife. Maybe they have children. What do they do?

    I should add that first cousins can marry in UK. As an amateur genealogist, I have come across several cases.

  • There are legitimate, practice reasons why people are wary of this kind of relationship, and poins of view that are, less so. My biggest concern with romantic relationships between blood relatives ir the genetic dangers of having offspring with someone who has too many commonalities in their genetic coding sequences too weed out the majority of damaging recessive genetic markers for a stable sequence too be assimilated. The other concern is a disproportionately high rate of child abuse cases associated with these kinds if pair bonding. As far az spiritual, religious, ethical, or philosophically moral standards go, I have no opinions yet. If the people in question are adults and not having offspring, I guess they can chant "Incest is best" till the cows come home, just as long as I don't have too see or hear it.

We all know close siblings having kids seems to be much more likely to have kids with serious problems! Cousins seem distant enough to prevent this.     We should respect relation normally and infront of society for which we are living

    Sex is a need of everyone, like our body need food, water sleep for energy sex is also a requirement of body

  • We are genetically programmed to not be attracted to close relatives. Millennia of incest and endogamy has bred it out of some people, but not all. For those of us who find incest creepy, the prejudice comes from the fear of accidental impregnation

    • Adoptive siblings and step-siblings are not blood relatives so our natural inhibitions aren't triggered by them

    • I'm thinking maybe because some adoptive siblings haven't known each other since birth and have gotten into each others lives later on in life and therefore feel safe with each other, and since they dont have that platonic-sibling-relation there might always be at risk/chance (depends on how you see it) that they end up fancying each in a love kind of way because they are close, but not platonic, cause there is no sibling-bond. Same as with step-siblings i think.
