Why is homosexuality no longer considered a mental disorder?

  • I don't really know, to be honest. I have nothing against people who are homosexual or bisexual. I'm straight but they don't bother me in the least unless they're pushing boundaries and hitting on me.

The DSM putting a label on it doesn't make any impact on me or anyone at all. When you classify homosexuality as a mental disorder, we sort of treating it as something that needs to be alleviated and fixed through psychotherapy or psychiatric care.

I think it's important to just embrace who you are instead of abiding by everyone's conventional way of living. All within rational moderation though. For example, I know an engineering student who is on the autism spectrum and he's absolutely brilliant.

He was telling me stories of his therapists in the past trying to convince him to go out in large social setting and that goes against the grain of what someone with autism should be doing. They are by default socially inept and sort of awkward. A social setting like that, they would not be at their best. They should be in a career field where communication skills are not a vital requirement. Engineering and Computer Science is perfect for guys like that.

Neurological diversity is a thing to consider. Embrace who you are, don't try to shut down your inner being all because society abides be X, Y, and Z standards. If you're gay, then go be gay. Who gives a fuck?

  • The APA simply got tired of being protested by 1973 (that had been going on for years prior to that, mostly after sodomy was no longer illegal in most states by 1967) so they simply changed their minds. It had nothing to do with science unfortunately. In fact it still is a mental disorder, just not officially (how is being attracted to the same sex where it serves no biological purpose in nature not a mental disorder?). I'll be surprised if the pedos don't take a page from the LGBT playbook over the next 40 or so years. Keep protesting state legislatures and Congress until it's legal (after all the age of consent used to be as low as 7 as recent as 1895), then get to work on the psychiatric establishment, then use the media for propaganda purposes and hope eventually the public accepts it as normal.

  • Because studies and evidence doesn't support it being a disorder. It doesn't harm anyone, it's just a sexual preference. Back when it used to be considered an illness it was based on religious beliefs and the fact that it wasn't talked about as much. I wouldn't say it's more common today, but it's more common to admit to being homosexual and talk about it today.

  • Probably because it's harmless. Consenting adults want to have same sex partners - doesn't really seem like a behaviour worth watching, institutionalising or trying to change.

    • What about the rate of STD's among homosexuals?

    • Most of this has been discounted as myth. Even if it's not, so what? People have the choice to use protection and/or not sleep around.

    • True. But my point is one trademark of classifying mental disorders is behavioral traits, especially behavioral traits that are risky/could cause self harm.

  • Because it's not a mental disorder (psychiatrists can't cure it).
It's actually a genetic disorder, birth defect, or perhaps some sort of hormonal disbalance.

    • Except that most recent studies prove that it is mostly environmental with only a genetical predisposition.

    • best answer

    • @FakeName123 So that means that in the future, it will be curable by genetic therapy.

  • Because it was never a mental disorder.

    • It used to be classified as one.

    • But it was never.

    • Oh wait, I see what you're saying nevermind. Sorry for the downvote

  • Because it's never been a mental disorder. It's a hormonal function. Before people haven't had the knowledge to cope with it specially with the forceful radical kingdom of religions. So poor people been victimized constantly and earned names. Now slowly people learning to cope with scientific states behind it and finally accept it and get away with their own lives instead of name callings and labeling them. However, still many people trying to so hard to not understand it. But it's not a mental disorder because science realized it's never been one from the first place and it was all wrong assumptions and myth. It was new at the time now people getting use to it more and know how to be understanding.

  • Now that Trump is president, you have to ask.. a mental disorder compared to what? Chuckle.

Politics has now redefined it as normal, but hey, I think we all know it's a type of mental disorder, in practice, even though you get jumped on when you say it.

Ever hear of the Emperor's New Clothes? That's what we are dealing with on this issue.

  • It used to be classified as one because people were more ignorant in the past...

  • because it's a sexual preference?

    • Pedophilia is a sexual preference as well, yet that is still on the APA books (as well as illegal, just as homosexuality used to be).

  • Because a lot more people started accepting it as a lifestyle. A sexual preference. Unlike other sexual mental disorders, this one doesn't exactly harm
The livelihood of other people, ya know? There's been more and more masses of people openly expressing it and accepting it that it's been recognized as normal. Personally, there isn't anything wrong with homosexuality. I can see why others are against it, but I'd rather not isolate homosexuals into something negative category knowing what it's like to have mental health issues. Any sort of disorder or illness should not be treated with disgust for the most part.

  • Mental disorders by definition are determine by whether it is considered socially acceptable/normal by society or religion. Seeing that the media has heavily campaign to make homosexuality normal, it is no longer deemed a mental disorder.

  • Because it's not one.

    Next question.

  • Why should it have been considered a "mental disorder" in the first place?

    • I never claimed it should have.

    • You posed the question. Do you believe it is?

    • Yes, I did pose the question. Can a man not ask a question without supporting a specific stance related to it? And yes, sort of. I wouldn't call it a "disorder" but just problematic behavior.

  • Because it isn't one

  • Because homosexuality was and still is a controversial topic and was considered not normal. But there is no proof that homosexuality affected cognition or behaviour in a neurological manner, so it was just considered a sexual preference than a disorder. Being transgender is in fact a disorder though if you want me to explain you can as as I've done a whole powerpoint on Gender Dysphoria for psychology class

    • *you can ask

  • Because it ISN'T a mental disorder. Never has been, only bigots/religious wackos call it a mental disorder so they can claim gays are somehow sick

  • Because it has been normalised.

  • Because science evolved.

  • Because we don't consider stupidity one anymore either.

  • For one of the same reasons we don't do much of the chemical castration thing anymore. We're not animals

  • I wouldn't say homosexuality is a mental disorder.

But holy fuck, most homosexuals are EXTREMELY promiscuous and spread STDs more than heterosexuals.

  • This is actually a really good question. Unfortunately the general population is too stupid to answer it or comprehend the answer. I'll save myself the frustration.

  • Progressists

  • Why should it be? I understand gays, it's just that they don't wanna deal with women which makes a lot of sense.

I seriously don't understand what a punk is that last guy. This is what drugs and alcohol makes out of humans - weak, defenseless piece of shit - when too much. Or aggressive animal if less.

Gays are just guys who've taken the red pill. Throughout history progressive people have always been branded 'crazy' and misunderstood until centuries later..

  • Its not s disorder its just gay.
