What makes a fetish, a fetish?

I've been talking to my GAGGer homies, and we came up with a few theories. This is a spinoff from a question I posted yesterday.

The dictionary definition is pretty straight forward, but there's a difference between text book answers and real-world answers.

Text book definition:

A form of sexual desire in which gratification is linked to an abnormal degree to a particular object, item of clothing, part of the body, etc."

The key element is, "sexual desire." The fetish can literally be about anything, but this object/concept must sexually arouse you.

I thought I had a beer and coffee fetish, but as it turns out, I don't. If beer and/or coffee made me sexually aroused, then it would be a fetish. Don't think so? I did some research and really came up with some doozies.

Climacophilia?

Arousal to falling down stairs

What makes a fetish, a fetish?

Autoplushophilia

Arousal to oneself dressed as a giant cartoon-like stuffed animal.
What makes a fetish, a fetish?

Coprophilia

Arousal to feces

What makes a fetish, a fetish?

Formicophilia

Arousal to insects
What makes a fetish, a fetish?

Nebulophilia

Arousal to fog

What makes a fetish, a fetish?

Xylophilia

Arousal to wood

What makes a fetish, a fetish?

But why is that of those 8 body parts that I mentioned, only the feet are called a fetish? You don’t go around hearing guys say, “I’ve got a boob fetish.” No, he’ll probably say, “I’m a boob man, or I’m an ass man.”

We’re very interested in your thoughtful theories, ideas and philosophies. Personally, I think the “fetish” label is used to denigrate a kink that you don’t share with others. BDSM doesn’t excite me, but I don’t attach the fetish label to it. I just call it BDSM. If you really want to impress the crap out of the team, make the first word of your reply be, “taboo.” That will mean that you actually read more than the title. lol

  • I once had someone tell me, "monogamy is a fetish, the only reason it isn't called that is because it's the socially accepted fetish" and I think most of these fall along the same reasoning.

Guys are expected to be attracted to asses and breasts, even if a male needed a "good" ass to get off they'd still probably call it "really into asses" before they called it a fetish.
In this sense, people use "fetish" or even sometimes "kink" as a derogatory term, to describe something far off from the social norms, something you shouldn't be into, something worthy of shame.
I do think many things for some would be considered fetishes (glasses, braces, age, and red hair to name a few), the name fetish is just heavily avoided when describing the arousal, I think in fear of that social meaning that links "fetish" to "taboo" and "unwelcome"

    • Holy shit! You knocked that fucker out of the ballpark. What I like is normal, and what YOU like is kinky fetish. I should be given the key to the city, and you should be behind bars! lol
Great job. You're able to think outside the box, and ignore the Google definition.

    • You just said my words.👍

  • Taboo is the thing that I think we use to mentally differentiate between fetishes and normal/expected desires. It's expected that guys are turned on by boobs and ass, but feet are 'weird' or taboo for a large portion of society, setting it apart as a fetish.

As a side note, I didn't know until a few years ago that men's arms, or forearms were a fairly popular 'fetish' among women. After a girlfriend at the time mentioned that what really caught her eye, aside from appreciating my as when I bent over which she's apparently been doing for years, was when I rolled up my sleeves, 'exhibiting' my forearms, which apparently are rather attractive. Since then I've heard at least a dozen women discussing the attractiveness of a man's forearms.

    • My friends told me that most all women say they like it when they talk in private chat.
And I can tell you that almost 95 % of men tell me that they like it.
But this is what I find stranger. If you post a rape fantasy fetish, the women will come out of the woodwork. So I'm baffled about what's taboo and what isn't.
This is yesterdays question. A ton of guys replied, and only two women.

    • I think a good portion of our society has come to a point where they glorify anything taboo just because it is taboo, and the worse it is the more they glorify it, as if accepting something that is rightfully taboo makes them a better, more gracious person. The fetishes you point out in your post are harmless and there isn't necessarily any logical reason for them to be taboo. Being harmless they see no reason for them to stand up for it. As you point out, however, they come out of the woodwork for rape fantasy fetishes and I've also noticed a significant number coming out of the woodwork over illegally young girls being with older guys. Both of these are harmful and in general just plain wrong, but they seem to think that being accepting of them increases their status as accepting, open people in some way. ☹️

  • Taboo:

I can't really answer the question, because I think people usually just make up their own definitions to things. To use a metaphor; Some people like vanilla ice cream, and some like more rare and exotic flavors.
I guess once you veer off the straight and narrow path, you become a kinkster to those that don't. I like vanilla, but it's most certainly not my favorite choice. So because of that, I like the fetish flavored ice cream.

My boyfriend has a foot fetish. (that label doesn't bother me at all)
I just absolutely hate it. I have to endure at least one or two foot massages per day, and I don't get to pay for pedicures anymore. Woe is me. lol :)

    • Wow! You said taboo! You're the second one. Yes, I feel your pain. lol
      I hate foot massages, also.

    • Taboo Taboo Taboo LMAO

    • Ok so, I'm curious, do YOU have a fetish? If so, what is it? :)

  • A fetish is whatever strongly arouses you sexually. It is part of your private sexual personality which you reveal only to a select few. You can have more than one fetish. To say, for example, that my partner has a breast fetish can be quite inaccurate. More accurate would be that he has a fetish for small breasts with large areolas. That's a part of his personality which he has chosen to share with me.

There can be a fetish which both partners enjoy. He may love to see her squat and pee, and she might love to do it for him.

Oh, there's so much one can share on this subject.

  • I think the textbook definition is pretty on point, something that is considered "abnormal" sounds right.

If a guy was to say he liked boobs no one thinks that is abnormal because most guys find that abnormal, but if some guy was to say that he liked knives and they made him aroused, people would definitely think that's "taboo and abnormal" and would worry for his mental state.

  • Taboo!!! LOL

I personally don't see anything wrong with a "fetish". It just tells me that someone really likes to do something sexually! I would actually encourage a woman (or a couple) to tell me theirs. I think engaging in that "fetish" can enhance the sexual experience. And, if it's really naughty, kinky or "taboo" I would probably be even MORE interested in doing or trying it! But hey, that's just me. What can I say? I like kinky sex. Especially if it challenges me (without pain, of course).

So, with that, here are my "fetish's":

Giving a woman an orgasm with either my fingers, tongue, cock or sex toy

    Eating pussy

    Role playing

    Acting out fantasies

Playing a sex game where the winner (s) have to do something really naughty, kinky or taboo.

    Intense orgasms

    Threesomes

    Being dominate

    Being submissive

Questions about any of those? Or do you have any you wish to tell me privately? Send me an email.

  • My darling husband has a craving for my smelly feet and underarm odor after I exercise, sunbathe, or wear cramped sweaty shoes all day. Took him years to admit it, so now I playfully go along with his fetish and make sure he enjoys my stickiness and stinky body now and then to thrill him. I use a little humiliating graphic talk as he’s sniffing and kissing, just to let him know what a dirty girl I am, He goes nuts! My Fortune 500 lawyer husband accepting all my germs, bacteria, and most smelly nooks as I order him to do it! Lol.

  • I think a foot fetish is called that because feet aren't usually seen as a sexual thing by the general population... Tits and ass are definitely more "universally" accepted as sexual, and so they don't count as fetishes cause you're "supposed" to find them arousing.

  • That you are not able to get sexually arose without it.

    • So guys who can only get aroused by boobs, have a boob fetish?

    • Hahaha... Technically, yes.

    • But they never call it that. It only seems to be a fetish if feet are involved.

  • I have a hand fetish. I love sexy pretty hands and nice long nails on a girl. I love touch. I love back and head scratches. I love to hold hands and play with them and her nails. I love sexy hand jobs. So that's one that never gets mentioned at all but is mine. It's prob the first thing my eyes go to on a woman. Pretty weird?

  • You get horny off specific acts, objects, body parts of specific organisms.

  • I have a woman's butthole fetish. By the way they say Hitler was a copraphiliac. You also forgot Necrophilia that Ed Gein, Ted Bundy, Gary Ridgeway was into

  • It can be defined in one of two ways. A) when you perceive as sexual something that in reality isn't sexual in the least. B) When you are sexually aroused by something that it's abnormal to be sexually aroused by. simply preffering one sexaul part of the body over others ins't a fetish at all (although it is a fetish if it's the ONLY part of the body that arouses you0

    • Awesome answer. Since you obviously have your share of grey matter, I'm going to challenge that a bit. If you or I are attracted to women's pussies, boobs, ass and feet, then none of this is a fetish? I mean they all hold equal weight, so we're not attracted to just one area?
      clipartion.com/.../gold-star-clipart-1-830x793.jpg

    • the vagina and boobs are normal, but the being attracted to feet is still a fetish; it's just the most common one (possibly next to BDSM). It's even known what causes it; the foot fetish arises when the area of the brain pertaining to feet accidentally crosswires in the the one pertaining to to sex, which happens to be adjacent (although I did speak with one guy on here who developed a foot fetish via Pavlovian conditioning).

    • Pavlovian conditioning? lol How did that happen?

  • I have a fetish for fishnets, stockings, and girls in country dress and cowboy hats. They need one of the three to ride my horse and taste that Texas BBQ sauce lol 😀

  • The definition I've always gone by is making something sexual thats is not normally seen sexually. Like shit and feet. They aren't things that a somewhat normal person woukd sexualize.

    • That's a pretty good answer. But according to our research, it's very normal, but it's not normal to admit it. So I'd say your answer is damn close, but not quite there.
      clipartion.com/.../gold-star-clipart-1-830x793.jpg

    • Well often people confuse the kinks and fetishes and I think your seeing that as what I tried to infer as somewhat normal. Bdsm, spanking, ass, boobs would be considered kinks. Whereas making out with a car 😂 is a fetish lol.

    • lol If you had to write definitions of kink & fetish, could you do it if you couldn't give examples?

  • Taboo is both celebrated and denigrated. And that is the way people like it, because the negative aspect creates a feel of doing something naughty and dirty, which can create a special feeling of intimacy.

The problem, in my opinion, is that we don't have a word for a preference for specific activities or body parts that are already sexual. So the word fetish is used, even if it is actually misapplied

  • I have fetish for shave smooth penises and shaved smooth pussie's and both male's and female's completely naked.

  • Maily ass tits feet and creampied

  • Fetish is something specific that turns you on.

  • It is the ability to the body part, object or behavior to turn you on. I have a woman fetish... women turn me on.

  • I don't know I guess a abnormal or uncommon type of attraction.

  • depends on what is considered "normal" by society. would phobias be the opposite to a fetish? what if you had ithyphallophobia?

    • Well, I guess it could be the opposite of it. So the question would be, whats the opposite of something arousing you? I guess the opposite would be a turn-off. I don't know a fancy term for that. But you're suggesting fear/phobia might be the opposite. I think it could be. But you're getting a gold star for understanding the question. I didn't ask for anyone to list their fetishes, and you didn't. Good job.
      clipartion.com/.../gold-star-clipart-1-830x793.jpg

    • well, since you're hot all they read was "fetish".

    • lol What if I worded it like this: "Read the fucking question before you answer. What makes a fetish, a fetish?"

  • What makes a fetish different from a obsession, is that a fetish is a sexual obsession.

    • People are saying that if the sexual obsession is mainstream, then it's not a fetish.

    • It being mainstream is not a deciding factor. Many fetishes can be very popular amongst people. Just a lot of them are usually very particular, or kept as a secret... Haha

    • OK. So most guys have a boob and ass fetish. They better start calling it that.

  • great question I think it has more to do with the idea that the fetish is normally more embarrassing and makes one uncomfortable to admit like bdsm or ddlg

    • I could Google ddlg, but why don't you just tell me what it is.

    • Oh it's daddy dom little girl it's just a domination thing I'm not really into it but just listing examples

    • My only point is, that the foot fetish is so damn common, that I think the word fetish should be dropped from it. Liking poop is a fetish, not a guy admiring pretty feet. That's just my opinion.
