Is prostitution something that can be accepted in society?

I really wish to know if prostitution is something that can one day be accepted in society. Obviously when done voluntarily. Not involuntarily. After all it's one's body. Male or female.

  • Well prostitution is actually legal in a lot of countries around the world, where they have strict regulations regarding the practice, and health rules, anti human trafficing rules, etc. Australia and New Zealand are like that, as well as a lot of European countries. I think it is acceptable to most people. Now if a woman who works at one of those places is out socially and someone asks what kind of work they do, do they tell them? I don't know if it is that open. I don't live in any of those countries.

    • Here in the US, it is legal only in rural areas of Nevada in licensed brothels. I think most of those ladies are open about it to their friends, but out in public if someone knows, they might face some attitude. Some of them are even married and might have children. So it isn't fully accepted even there.

  • Yes, in some countries we are already heading in that direction.

you can't prohibit it, making it illegal will only make it worse for the people working in that area so we should legalize it and make it safe for the people who chose voluntarily to go that direction. If people wanna offer sexual services for money or some use them, then that's their good right and none of my business

    • thanks for MHO :P

  • It already is sufficiently 'accepted'. If it became any more accepted, as in brothels existing, that's like a recipe for disaster in which even more females across the globe would be living in horrid conditions as they're traded to fuck randoms and through this, make more money for their pimps.
(I also don't see why making money off of sex should be any more accepted when sex+women enjoying/engaging in it is already a hard enough pill to swallow for far too many cultures/religions to this day.)

    • even if they want to voluntarily?

    • It may start like that but within a month, it's inevitable that you'd hear about a bunch of brothels springing up 'under the table'. Especially as the influx of migrants looking to make a quick buck (especially if it benefits men at the disadvantage of women) from third-world countries continues into Europe+North America.

    • I'm sorry. I didn't quite get you. How is not not socially acceptable if it's voluntarily? If they want to get cash by using their body isn't it their choice?

  • In parts of Europe, it's already accepted and legal.

If it were to become accepted and legal within the U. S., it would lower human trafficking and rape statistics. It's not necessarily a bad thing. If a woman or man wants to sell their body and participate in sex work, that would be their choice. No one would be forcing them.

  • I doubt it. Even if it's voluntary, if people think it's gross to do for themselves, they don't want other people to do it either.

  • Its accepted in certain places in the world...

  • Of course it can. It's already accepted like in Germany.

  • During the renaissance (don't if it's well written) it was. I think little by little it'll be accepted back again.
Also I think legalizing prostitution would help a lot to reduce illegal prostitution and human traffic.

    But I don't know xD

    • I so agree. if prostitution were legalized then well, people could go willingly and others wouldn't have to be trafficked!

    • Yes and no. It goes beyond that: if you legalize it customers are always going to prefer to go to a legal place than an illegal, therefore it stops being profitable to traffic women and more than that if legal then you can establish health and payment regulations which would improve prostitutes lives

  • Prostitution should be legal and regulated in the United States. It would solve many problems.

  • I think it should be accepted PROVIDED it is regulated.
People should not be forced into doing prostitution. It must be on their own free will.
Health should also be a priority for BOTH the prostitute and the client. There should be certificates that proves this to both parties.

  • Never. It's one of the oldest professions and it still hasn't been accepted. Can't see it ever been accepted.

  • It should be legalised, and brothels licenced. Those working in the "trade" should be subject to regular health checks.
This should hopefully keep the pimps and the seedy side away, should protect the people working there.
It may not be totally acceptable to all in society, but it's an outlet for many who for different reasons are unable to form relationships. And in doing so can help women be safer in society.

  • Don't know, don't think it should be.

  • Personally... If I can't praise it I wouldn't criticize it either

  • Meh why do u wish it was "accepted" one day?

    • what is that supposed to mean?

    • I asked u a question.

    • Well, let's take it this way. If someone tells someone that they are a prostitute well, the receiving end might not be so willing to hang out with that person next time onwards. It's it's not considered very respectable. So I wish that one day people can say with pride that " im a prostitute and I'm proud of it".

    • how are you so sure? I mean, they still exist. it's not like they don't.

    • Because ther will always be a group of people protesting about it

    • I agree. But isn't it one's choice? well, when it is one's choice.

  • Yes.

  • if sugar daddy relationships are legal then i dont see why not.

  • I believe it can be especially if voluntary, it's your body so you should be able to do with it what you want?

  • It always has been, despite occasional half-hearted efforts at preventing it.

  • yes it must.

  • Well its part of society so must be accepted

  • Maybe in the far future, prostitution has too long of a history to be a very undesired profession to people.

  • Every person on this site is promoting prostitution.

    • no one said anything about promoting prostitution. We're just here discussing on whether or not it should be socially acceptable.
