At 16 people are old enough to decide what to do with their own bodies. They won't always make the 'right' choices, but no one ever would when they first start trying. 16 SHOULD be the age of consent universally and I'm glad it seems to be so in your state/country! That said, he probably just is unsure about things and needs to know you support him and are there if he needs anything - but that you're not pushing your support on him. The advantage of consent being legal at 16 is that he's still in your house and you can guide and support him instead of him making the exact same mistakes 2 years later when you're not around. So try to take advantage of that small victory without abusing it.
I'd tell the coach that if he ever touches you son again, you'll out him very publicly and then make good on it if he does. He's completely out of line and you're well within your rights to report him to the league.
It's not about that it's gay--it's about that your son is underage and a coach is an authority figure that kids need to be able to trust.

Look, this has nothing to do with him being straight or gay. Someone who is 12 years older than him is taking advantage of him. Even if your son is the age of consent, there is likely a legal limit placed on the age difference. A typical limit would be no more than 3 years older, and the age difference in this situation happens to be quadruple that amount.
