There are many different flavors of threesomes and it's pretty important to clarify which one you're interested in ahead of time so there's no awkward surprises in the heat of the moment. The most important differentiating factor is whether or not the threesome involves bisexual people. No matter how you position yourselves in a threesome, someone is always going to end up in the middle at some point. Who you WANT in the middle is quickly and easily clarified by the abbreviation used (therefore avoiding right off the bat the need for an awkward conversation about it).
