My girlfriend had three or four sexual relationships and a one night stand before she met me. It did not bother me at all - and we have lived together for ten years now and have three children. (We don't want to get married, but for purposes of this question, we'll assume.)

That said, I actually had more sexual relationships than she had. So I am hardly going to have a standard harsher on her than I am my own. The point is not what we did - some of which I am not proud of - but where we are now. We have three children. she is a spectacular mommy, she is my best friend, the person I most trust in all the world, and yes, we have an amazing sex life. Sometimes wild and animal, and sometimes passionate and romantic.

All in all, good enough.

The article I took this from was talking about divorce rates, underneath it said that the percentages were the number of women still married after 10 years - as in those with the fewest were the most likely to stay married, and the likelihood decreases with each sexual partner.

  @vald9inches There are many others, all it takes is a quick google search. Yeah, these are based on averages, and of course it's not entirely certain either way. According to most studies 1 in 5 who were virgins before marriage divorce so it's not certain that it will work, and 1 in 5 who had 16+ partners stay married so it's not certain that it will fail. The point is that it's more likely. Just like someone might cheat on a previous partner and not cheat on the next one, or they might not cheat on their previous partner and cheat on the next one. But when someone acts a certain way it tells you things about their character, and to completely ignore it and pretend that it's completely random to me is a bit silly.

  @vald9inches Yeah but it says a lot about someone's view of sex if they have a lot of it. Someone who stays a virgin until marriage is most likely religious, most likely feels that there's a strong connection between sex and love, most likely much less open about sex and sexual attention from people they've just met, most likely puts a strong emphasis on monogamy and engaging in sex only in a relationship, most likely doesn't make impulsive choices based purely on emotion and what makes them feel good at the time. If they have a lot of partners it suggests the opposite. Some people might change their attitudes, others don't. But I don't think it's smart to refuse to acknowledge this and pretend that it's completely random, again someone's past behaviour says a lot about their character, their beliefs, their level of self-control etc.

  @englisc Religious marriage is not about love its about a covenant or contract so don't delude yourself. god commanded the wife to be obedient servant to the husband that is it. And what self control are you talking about? This is a new culture and new perspective on the world that is different than the old world view. you have the luxury to talk shit about it because it is new and only emerging now so whatever "most likely" scenario you come up with will "mostly likely" resolve itself in the future after the culture has matured and learned from experience and with new society standards, practices, and values to make it more successful.

  @vald9inches We're talking about marriage here though, the question is whether a man would marry a girl with X amount of partners. I have my reasons why I wouldn't, and regardless of whether it's a new culture it's statistically more likely to succeed if someone has certain traits and values than if they don't. When I say self-control I'm talking about how easy it is to seduce someone. Someone with more partners, a woman especially, often gets there because they're more easily seduced into having sex than someone who is more insistent on waiting. As for the rest, nothing today is new. Plenty of cultures of the past have gone the way we're going today, as in more sexually open, promiscuous, valuing monogamy and marriage less. All of them either collapsed or were invaded by stronger cultures because monogamous marriage and family values are the bedrock of any strong civilisation - losing them makes a society weak.

  @vald9inches That's why this evolution of our society will never happen, monogamy will never be outdated. We're not learning anything new, or anything better. This has all been done thousands of times before and always ends in failure. Many people think that progress happens in a linear fashion but in fact it's cyclical, history repeats itself. A man called Joseph Unwin studied over 5000 cultures of the past and this was a pattern he noticed, not one of them succeeded.

  That is a pretty bold statement to say all civilizations fell for the sole reason and nevertheless you are talking about ancient times that has nothing to do with our modern era and the introduction of birth control and std prevention. So you definition of self control is having less sex with less partners? and why would that be useful or valuable other than your own value standards? and what traits would make it more statistically likely to succeed? monogamy trait? lol

  @vald9inches It's to do with the structure of society mainly, what gives a society the energy to advance, cohesion etc. Cultures that were monogamous and family oriented progressed faster and were more cohesive, then once they reached a certain level of success they forgot those values, became more liberal, and eventually fell apart. Most likely because of many other things, but those things were caused by the dissolution of marriage and family - birth control and STD treatment would have little to do with. They didn't collapse through too many people having children - when this happened every time the birth rates would go too low, below replacement level. They also didn't all die off because of STDs. When you want to predict things you have to notice patterns. This was a pattern observed in every failing culture - as Einstein once said, to try the same thing again and expect different results is insanity.

  @vald9inches As for self-control, yes, kind of. If someone has more partners they've said yes to more partners. If they have less, they've said no to more partners - that takes more self control. It's useful because if she's more likely to say no to someone who is trying to seduce her, she's less likely to cheat. It has to do with the ability to delay gratification also rather than acting impulsively.

  You are still making bold claims and as far as history is concerned they are very biased claims. It's actually debatable if Einstein quoted that but even if he did does not give legitimacy to it. I could also name Thomas Edison who said "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." so evidently he repeated and experimented 10,000 ways before he finally made the light bulb work.

I would want to know the backstory of why she slept with so many men and if she is willing to commit, even after all those sexual engagements with men, I'd be all for it! Maybe she has a really high sex drive and didn't find the right man to meet her desires. Maybe she felt unloved and thought sleeping with men will make her feel better. I wouldn't judge someone, just because they slept with a lot of people because there's always a reason for it.
