  • I pondered upon this quite a few times when I was a child till this question slipped off my mind lol & now that I came across it again, I also wanted to know the answer & couldn't see anything sensible unless I read someone's opinion on here, @yougurt answered 'To sound less graphic' & this seems so logical, I'm taking that to be the reason!

    • Sex is graphic by nature. It's like saying "storks are bringing a baby" to bullshit a little kid about pregnancy, rather than just being honest and educational with them. It's dumb.

    • Agreed but details aren't always necessary! & That is a different matter I guess, about being honest & educational with kids but this isn't about being educational... you normally don't say to kids that I'm gonna sleep with him/ her either... This particular phrase has different purpose...

  • To sound less graphic. You don't say "I'm going to poop" or "I'm going to pee". You just say "I'm going to the bathroom". There's no need for details.

    • LMAO!

    • Yeah... bad example, since you are actually going to the bathroom. Sex is sex and sleep is sleep; they're two different things. Going to the bathroom is going to the bathroom; what you do when you get there doesn't change the truth of what you just said, which is that you're going to the bathroom. No need to ask someone for detail. Saying "I slept with so-and-so" should mean just that-- that you slept with them. If they fucked you, then that's not sleep, is it. Words have actual meanings. I can see why you chose the example you did to try and make a point, however. Doesn't mean it's accurate.

  • It's a ridiculous and antiquated term, that just needs to go away.
We ALL know what we're talking about, but we need to pretend we don't.
Sally: "Sharon, did you sleep with that guy last night?
Sharon: "I tried to sleep with him, but he didn't want to. He just wanted to fuck me all night long."

    • Thank you.

  • You care too much about words lol. seriously. It's less blatant and sometimes people who have sex they sleep after in the bed they fucked in. You're like the Jerry Seinfeld of GAG

    • Yeah I dunno, I suppose if people are so concerned about how blatant their underlying subject is that they use incorrect verbiage to refer to it, then they... probably just shouldn't talk about it at all. Or, call it what it is. It's pretty easy.

  • It's just a euphemism. Some people are too delicate to say sex.

Although sleeping with someone often implies something longer term and ongoing, as opposed to wham bam thank you ma'am see ya later.

  • It sounds more pure

    • There's nothing pure about sex.

  • It's just an expression. Like when you say "I HATE HIS GUTS" when that person's intestines have done nothing to you.

    • Uh... I don't think that's really an apt comparison, no offense.

    • None taken. But I stand behind my main point, which is: it's just an expression and don't look too much into it.

    • FINALLY! Somebody gets how us guts feel! So much hate for no reason! Geez.

    • Heh?

    • AND great felling in your nuts when you get it in the butts ;)

  • I feel like you created this question just to rile people lol, looking at your responses to people's opinions 😂😂😂

    • No, not really. Who's riled? It's just a question.

    • Some of the opinion owners lol

    • If that's all it takes to "rile" somebody, then they have serious problems.

  • Usually "sleeping with" implies spending the night after the sexytimes, I think

    • It was more a rhetorical question than anything else.

  • because.. that's what you do when you're having sex with someone? What do people normally do after sex? They either cuddle or fall asleep, meaning you're sleeping with that person.

  • Just because.

    • "Because" is usually a bad reason, for anything.

  • Because that's what usually happens when you sleep with the opposite gender... sex

    • I guess if you're sleeping with them, you're sleeping with them, and if you're having sex with them, then you're having sex with them. Makes sense, no?

    • If one says 'they went on a date', what things automatically come to your mind?

    • Many dates are different, and there are many different kinds of dates, so I'd say I don't know.

  • Its classier than saying fucking, smashing, banging, fornicating, etc

    • It's also dumber. Call things what they are.

    • Dumber? What are you talking about? so if you're at a friends party, do you say "I have to go to the bathroom" or "I have to go push shit out of my ass"?

    • Heh? If I have to go to the bathroom, that's a sensical thing to say-- I *am* going to the bathroom. If I'm having sex, I'm not sleeping. How is that a comparison that makes sense to you.

  • It comes from the need to say someone was having sex, without actually saying it. Just as going to the powder room, means going to pee, and nobody is going to powder in the bathroom. (usually) It's a euphemism.

  • the magic of slang wording.

  • People say that trying not to be so vulgar/crude.

    • "Have/having sex" isn't vulgar or crude. It just is what it is. If it is crude, then it shouldn't be talked about at all in the first place, no?

    • Well to most people it is

    • I guess they shouldn't talk about it at all then.

  • Because some people just would rather not say the word sex I think. Maybe because religious reasons or because they grew up masturbating and always thought that was wrong so they started taking sex as wrong I don't know but there’s plenty more reasons I can think of

  • Often times you can speak in public about sex without innocent ears (kids) picking up on the topic of conversation.

    • Lol kids talk about sex all the time.

  • Don't know

  • Be a use It a sounds nicer then let me fuck u just somthing people do I guess

  • I think that's because commonly, all occurs in a bed, or near to it.
Or just to make it sound less sexual.

    • Lol make sex sound sex sexual. Weird, no?

  • I've been wondering the same. But no one can answer it

  • It's just a softer way of saying it. Semantics. Just like "I want to see you" vs "I need to see you". You don't literally NEED to see them. It's semantics.

    • It's poor semantics. I see your point though.
