Do you personally know more LGBT men, or women?

Hey!!! I had originally wanted to make this poll bit more complex.. including each sub groups (such as.. do you know more Gay men or Lesbians, do you know more Bi men, or Bi women etc etc) but there weren't enough polling options! haha So if you would like to include that down below.. Feel Free!! Regardless, I know there is no official count of the actual size of the LGBT community. I have seen surveys that claim it makes up a very significant portion of the population, and others that claimed it is relatively tiny portion. I have seen surveys that claim more LGBT men, and others that claim more LGBT women. Its clear that there isn't really a good way of statistically recording a populations sexuality (unlike there is for race, or poverty, or political views.. etc) I just thought it would be fun to put out a simple poll to see if you knew more LGBT men or women (or perhaps relatively equal amounts).

  • I don't have any gay/lesbian individuals in my close circle of friends. However, one of my wife's best friends is gay and he's kind of an acquaintance of mine, so I think I can count him. I don't know any lesbian women personally. That means I know more LGBT men (one).

Over the course of my entire life, I have met one, possibly two lesbian girls. There is one girl I'm absolutely certain. The other girl is actually an ex-girlfriend of mine. I don't talk to her anymore but there are some indications that she might be lesbian (including the fact that she never wanted to kiss me or do anything sexual when we were dating). However, I'm not 100% sure.
As for gay men, I've also had an openly gay teacher in high school, an openly gay lecturer at university, two acquaintances I knew privately and possibly one or two more.
So yeah, also across the span of my life, it's still men.

  • In my lifetime, I've came across more LGBT women in my life, and it's not even close-THAT I KNOW OF. Obviously, many men have to put on a "macho" act, and hide the fact they are gay. For instance, there was a football player on our team in high school who was a beast on the field, and acted just like a typical male jock. However, back in 2011, he came out of the closet, and is homosexual. It makes me wonder, how many perceived "straight" men I've met in my life are actually non-heterosexual?

I've still never came across an openly bisexual male in my life, but I have came across roughly a dozen of bisexual women.

    • That pretty much sums up my life Gay men tended to be the most visible (but not necessarily numerous) because everyone seemed to care. Yet I've known about an equal amount of gays and lesbians when it came to bisexuals I've known of only a couple of bi men but I've known of probably more bi girls than I've known of every other aspect of the LGBT community combined. there were also a lot of "straight" girls who were flexible.. but never really took upon the label of bi

    • Whenever a "straight/heterosexual" girl is "flexible", or "curious", she's just a bisexual. It's as simple as that. If you're straight, you don't find the opposite sex attractive.

    • See! that is my opinion as well but the problem is... Females tend to be able to label themselves Males on the other hand are not allowed to O. o Bi men are always labeled as Gay Gay men as Gay Straight and experimental men as Gay haha but on the flipside Lesbians are Lesbians Bi girls are "looking for attention" and curious girls are "pretending to attract men" ha

  • Guess it has a lot to do with who you meet but I personally know 6 openly gay guys, 4 who were from high school, lesbians 3. Didn't know anyone guys who were bisexual (like myself) to my knowledge but after high school at least 1 guy I thought was straight who was seeing a girl then, later I found out had a boyfriend. It sucks when you find out a guy you're crushing on is gay. That happened to me. Though a couple girls in my circle admitted to being bi.

    • For me its probably roughly 5 gay guys 5 lesbians a couple of bi guys and at least a dozen bi girls :P

    • This number represents around half the people I actually know as friends, or acquaintances. Close to an equal amount are straight. The size of the LGBT population I believe is higher like you said. How you find out those who were bisexual, especially the guys? I want to see more guys actually come out as bi, would make it easier on them lol

    • I just ran into them to be honest O. o it came up in conversation

  • I’m at the stage in life where people just start coming out as part of the lgbt community. My close friends (which were mostly girls) came out to our group of friends in highschool. So I know more girls who say they are lesbian

    • In my experience it does seem like the LGBT community is like.. 60 to 75 % female

    • You are wrong man it's about 50/50

  • I feel like I say more women because I’m from a more conservative area, and I feel like the guys are under more social pressure to not show their true identity.

  • I know more men that are in the LGBT community. But when you include other sexual orientations in LGBTQ+, I know more women (I’m ace myself).

    • hmm i see I know an equal amount of gays and lesbians but when it comes to bisexuals. pansexuals. . etc. almost all of them are female

    • Depends as well on the person itself and whether they choose to tell others. A guy who is with a girl can be pan or bi as well, but doesn’t feel like telling others about his orientation.

    • Same goes for me! Just because I’m in a relationship with a guy. People assume that I’m straight while I’m asexual.

  • I know a few more gay men than lesbians, I know far more openly bi women than men, and I know far more trans women (M to F) than trans men (F to M). I also know a lot more women who identify as queer in some regard, and a lot more women with a non-traditional sexual orientation. Overall it's hard to say, and my sample size is definitely not large enough to be good scientific data.

  • i know about 5, a dn most are boys, only 1 is a girl

    • for me its the other way around ha

    • yea My crush is Bi, and he was bullied. but he's rlly nice

    • I had a few crushes in the past that were bi as well O. o... actually really liked this lesbian girl too

  • Women. But I feel that a lot of these "bi girls" are just bi for attention. So I don't know the true amount.

    • I always viewed that as a double standard bi girls = for attention bi guys = gay, but can't accept it haha in my experience gay men and lesbians are relatively in number but ya... bisexuals seem to be very dominantly female.

    • It's only because I met a lot of "party bisexual" girls or "just a phase" in high school/college.

    • I think that could support the "females are fluid, and their sexuality just depends at the time" in some ways many people believe that female sexuality cna't really be defined... its more emotional and circumstantial but ya.. I don't know

  • I'd say men, but it's nearly equal for me

    • for me its mostly women but id say that gays and lesbians are relatively equal to me but when it comes to bisexuals.. its almost only female

    • Oh yeah, more women are going to be bisexual than men. Because for the most part, when it comes to men they either like on thing or they don't. I hardly find bisexual men. But I do see an equal amount of lesbians and gay men. Men stand out more though.

    • Very true thats why in my mind it seems like the LGBT community is like 75% female haha but yes. Gay men do stand out more than the rest.

  • There’s definitely more lesbians here but that might just be the area pretty conservative up here in Idaho, down in California that’s a different story

    • in my area its largely an equal amount of gays and lesbians but bis are almost always female.

  • I know more men.

    • hmm i know roughly an equal amount of gays and lesbians but when it comes to bis.. mostly girls

    • Hmm, I'm bi and I know two other bi women, one bi man. I know three lesbians and about five gay men, if I'm remembering everyone off the top of my head.

    • I have known roughly 5 gay men.. and 5 lesbians but only like 2 bi guys but well over a dozen bi girls

  • I only know about 4 LGBT people. They are friendly people.

    • agreed! :) I've known probably over 30 in my life most of them women.

    • Sadly, and somehow, I only know one LGBT female.

    • that almost seems impossible sometimes I believe females are just all naturally LGBT to some extent haha though I guess a lot of girls dont label themselves that O. o I knew plenty of "straight" girls.. who slept with women.

  • I know an equal amount of gay men and women.

  • In real life, I know none anymore thankfully.

    • haha thankfully? xD

    • Yup ☺️

    • were they male or female? O. O or an equal mix of both?

  • Women

  • I've known more LGBT guys than the girls

  • For me it's equal, I know people who are gay or bisexual, some of my closest friends are pansexual and my boyfriend himself is demisexual.

    • hmm I see I know an equal amount of gays and lesbians but when it comes to bisexuals... pansexuals.. etc they are almost entirely all female.

  • Hmm... I know like, three gay guys and about three lesbians and maybe 5 bisexual girls. No bi guys though. So maybe it's about equal, favoring gay girls more than guys.

    • pretty much same for me gays and lesbians seem about equal but gay men tend to be more "verbal" about it lesbians I just FOUND out randomly in conversation while for gay men it was more through gossip.. or him being like "IM SOOO GAAAYYYY!!!" and super out about it whereas in terms of bisexuals I've known of a couple bi men.. but they seem rare but I've largely only known of bi girls..

    • Oh wait... one of my best friends is a lesbian, so if you count her girlfriends the number of lesbians I know goes up. Still, you're right they don't tend to broadcast their gayness to the world like dudes do.

  • For me it’s about equal but I know a few more lgbt girls than guys.

    • for me when it comes to Gays and Lesbians its pretty equal but when it comes to bisexuals, its mostly women

    • Yeah same with me. I know a lot of bisexual girls.

    • Mhmm it does appear that the consensus is that the LGBT community is roughly equal though at least from the poll so far.

  • more women. i stay away from gay men, not because i'm homophobic, but here in london they tend to be annoying skinny white guys that think they're black, and give unnecessary sass all the time

    • haha in my experience it seems like the LGBT community is mostly female (like I don't know.. 75% female 25% male).. though gays and lesbians seem equals it seems like most bi people are female

    • those are some really idiotic, fruitless assumptions. you're also forgetting that lgbt includes people who are trans, non-binary, and intersex. so assessing it based on whos male and whos female is automatically pointless

    • lol just using them as examples not as a whole wonderful really idiotic, fruitless assumption on your part :P

  • Two of my best friends are lgbt. Ones pan and the others bi

    • Ya I always assumed females were far more likely to be LGBT.. even if they didn't advertise it. but men were the ones who "advertised" there sexuality more.

  • I have many friends of both sex that swing both ways as well as a few gay friends and lesbians

    • You actually know openly bisexual males? I've still never came across one.

    • @EnglishArtsteacher my ex is one and I know a few others

    • What state do you live in? Here in Ohio, I barely even meet bisexual women-let alone men (or at least they don't admit they are).

  • For some reason, I know and am friends with a lit of gay men, but not one single lesbian woman. They usually don’t seem to like me. No idea why.

    • I find that Lesbians teen to be pretty exclusive :P they dont advertise their sexuality like a lot of gay men do they tend to avoid most everyone but other lesbians I've heard a lot of bisexual girls complain about how lesbians won't date them O. o gay men seem to be cool with most everyone hahaha personally I've known about an equal amount of gay and lesbians but when it comes to bisexuals i almost know nothing but bi women.
