Is being bisexual and pansexual the same thing?

What's your opinion on this? Is being pansexual a thing? Or are they really just bisexual?

They are very similar but not exact.

Bisexual would imply 2 but bisexual people can go beyond liking just male or female.

Pan would imply all.

From my understanding, Pan is about the person and there genital configuration is not important in selecting a partner.

While Bi is about the genital configuration, they just might like all of the configurations.

A Pan friend said it best to me when I came out to her as being Bi. Pick the title that resonates most with you and don't get dragged into the arguments that result between the 2.

Bi resonates with my more. It might be my age. Pan wasn't a well known thing when I figured out I liked both the leading man and the leading woman on most shows.

Bisexual likes women and men, those are two genders. In those two genders biological sex, gender identity (which gender you are attracted to) and gender expression match. Someone might have masculine biological sex and feminine gender expression (a man that dresses up like a woman). Someone might have masculine biological sex and feminine gender identity (a man attracted to men, homosexual). Surgery now allow also gender change or keeping attributes of both biological genders (like transgenders). When you consider also gender identity and expression, the final gender combination might not end up always in the binary value man/woman. Pansexual is attracted also by all those other genders.

Hi a bi person here currently working on a degree in gsws, I think that being bisexual doesn't mean you're only attracted to cisgendered men and women. It just means that gender plays a role in how you're attracted to a person (the way a cis-man makes me feel is different to how a trans-woman makes me feel). Whereas with pansexuality, gender isn't a factor in your attraction to a person. You are more concerned about how attracted you feel to the person first, the gender of that person is an afterthought.

I’m Pan and it’s not. Bisexual is both genders. Pan is all genders and the inbetweens.

I don't mind, I'm an extremely open book haha. Since I believe pansexuality and bisexuality are basically the same thing, I don't see it as a valid label, so I call myself bisexual. While I haven't discussed it in extreme depth with my bi friends, I do know that they have also expressed interest or attraction to transgender people, and cross dresses on several occasions, and non of them label themselves as pan

@R4vedave interesting. I do see the similarities with Bi and Pan. From what I’ve read and what I’ve talked through with others, Bi implies only two genders. Not moving between two genders or any gender fluidity. Just two hence the Bi.

I will admit that this may just boil down to difference of opinion on the topic of gender, as I personally believe there are only two. So to someone who believes in many different ones, I can see why they'd see a pan label as valid, but I don't share those views.

Since everyone is either Male or Female, and even intersex people present as either male or female, then YES they are the same. Because regardless of whether you are male or female, if you have sex with both male and female people, then you are bi-sexual!
Since in Latin prefix PAN means “all” or “all members of a group” then a person who has sex with all members of the group called Human beings, is by biological definition bi-sexual, as there are only TWO sexes.

I often get lost in this - Some of them are very close in definition like you say pan and bi, another one isn't demi just wanting a deep relationship with someone.
Ok I am a middle aged so probably way out of the loop here but the impression I get is that your hetero, bi, homo are more fixed in that often the endgame is a monogamous relationship whereas a lot of the new ones are more fluid or poly in nature possibly dissassociating itself from the sole goal of monogamy, it is okay to get sexual/emotional/spiritual release from more than one source, Whatever floats your boat.

Scientifically, your statement is false. You may perceive there are 2 sexes ONLY, but that is a false belief! In point of fact there is a broad continuum of sexes.
