An erection can occur totally randomly. It happens much more frequently among teenage boys than adult men, though. At school my maths teacher suddenly asked me to go in front of the class to solve a maths problem, I would go, but I could not because I had a sudden erection. Apologising I said I could not stand up, all guys in the classroom burst out laughing and girls understood too because I was blushing so much. Sometimes erections happen when you are just walking on the street or standing in metro. It can be quite annoying if you are wearing trousers or shorts where it is visible compared to jeans. Thanks, Alisa! Did he say it was random? From personal experience, when you are sitting right next to an attractive girl, the chances of you getting a "random" boner are slim; it means he is excited. It can be very embarrassing if he is unsure of how you feel and so he tries to hide it or pretend he is not aware of his own erection. :)

I would not consider it a lie, but not noticing your own erection is impossible unless you are sleeping, drunk/high, or you have some malfunction where you cannot feel anything down there. I think he is being shy. Best not to push him about it, some guys can be super confused or ashamed of their own erection, especially since he is only 20 and just left his teenage years and puberty behind. You can tease him some more if you want to see it again and him blushing. Just don't torture him for too long, please. Hahaha

Well, random bonersand induced boners are two different things.

Random implies that they happen for no reason, at any time. They are absolutely real, but they happen without any cause or stimulus.

You can cause a boner, simply by turning a guy on, which depends on what he finds arousing, but then it wouldn't be random.

Completely false. Males can have random boners ( may not be fully erect). If fact, the body does this to try and keep the vessels and muscles healthy. If im not mistaken when i male sleeps he has 3 to 5 boners while sleeping ( this does not include the "boner" or "morning wood")
