I think that the popularity of that genre is due to the body type not existing in nature, thus the sexual wiring in our brains is not designed to take it into account. Thus the breasts, hips, and butt trigger arousal in those people attracted to women, and the penis fails to override the process due to said wiring not being equipped to take a penis into account when breasts are present. I personally do not find shemales attractive, but assuming you are straight, you may or may not find the inverse (women who have had surgery to turn their entire body aside from their genitals male) attractive yourself, which while rarer does exist.
