Why is "nymphomaniac" a term?

1. Why does nymphomaniac only apply to women?

2. Why do we even need the term in the first place?

I've been thinking about this, and I figured that the term only hurts both men and women alike. For the guys, I think it's safe to assume most of us would be appreciative of women with high sex drives. So why do we try and isolate those women with the term "nymphomaniac?" It's not like we use the term for men with high sex drives either. Likewise, for women I feel like it's simply a derogatory term. Why can't we call a woman with high sex drive... a woman with high sex drive? It shouldn't really be that big of an issue, but people still try to differentiate women with sex drives from everyone else like it's somehow a bad thing. And religion clearly isn't to blame because I know so many catholic families with 4 or more kids. That doesn't happen by the grace of God. I don't know it just feels like the term has no constructive purpose.

  • I personally use the term Nympho, positively, to describe women who are sexually confident and experienced in bed.

    To me, girls begin shy and very unwilling for sex due to the need to undress and expose her naked body.

    But after she is experienced and satisfied with orgasms, she actually crave sex (possibly) more than man

    So its beyond chemicals.

    When guys talked about "sex drive" we are talking about sperm build up and testosterone.

    But when a girl transforms into a nympho, we are talking about orgasms, sexual satisfaction and sexual confidence after much exposure.

    Hence we normally associate Nympho to married girls, wives with kids.

    They are not sluts and they are not high drive. But they are sexual beings brought out due to their enjoyment of sex (whores may also experience these, but I don't put them in this category).

    So my opinion is based on the positive side and non chemical aspect. Can you accept my definitions?

  • Because Satyriasis is the male term.
    Nymph= Nymphomaniac
    Satyr= Satyriasis

    Both just mean the person really really likes sex, I don't think it's derogatory in either case, though it has certainly been used derogatorily towards women by puritan types.

    • It means they have an unhealthy compulsion to seek out sexual activity, like a heroin addict.

  • Really intriguing... have labeled myself that over the years. Kinda glad it’s a thing... I mean fuckers actually sat around a table and gave us our own Greek goddess type name... or
    But maybe it’s because no one want to say..
    satyriasis noun
    sa·ty·ri·a·sis \ ˌsā-tə-ˈrī-ə-səs , ˌsa-\
    Definition of satyriasis
    : excessive or abnormal sexual craving in the male

    😂😂😂😂

    • Exactly. I have never heard that term used. Nymphomaniac is used a porn category, and I've even heard my friends throw that word around while describing girls they've hooked up with. I don't know maybe I feel like it'd be offensive because I've always been different and have been isolated for basically my entire life because of it. I just wouldn't feel comfortable labelling someone else who enjoyed the same things I did as something separate than myself. It just seems counterintuitive.

    • Stop looking at it as a negative... it’s a great thing to be a nymph... unless you’re not. So your friends throwing the word around let’s me know they have no clue... there aren’t many true nymphs... which could now be labeled as sex addicts, and... here we go with more labels. Lol

    • Yeah you have a point actually... I guess I project my desire to be normal on everyone else lol.

  • The male term is satyr, and the affliction satyriasis. It's more or less just as destructive as nymphomania.

  • A man who has uncontrollable sexual desire is a satyriasis. A woman who has an uncontrollable sexual desire is a nymphomaniac. There are words for each type.

    • Yeah I forgot that satyriasis was even a word. But that goes to show that we overuse the term nymphomaniac. Women that have a sex drive at all will be called nymphos, but I have never heard the word satyriasis used out loud in my life. I've really only read it in literature classes to be honest. To be fair we just call men "thirsty" though.

    • Yep you are right. So in a way you can say there is still a persecution of women, because they hide men but advertise the women.
