I'm surprised they would find it weird. I've found lots of girls are attracted to intelligence, especially intelligent girls, which happen to be particularly attractive to me too. Maybe they thought it was weird that you spelled it that way instead of the more common sapiosexual :) :)

Appreciating someone's intelligence is just one part of their whole "beingness"- it isn't weird. Your friends might be more shallow thinkers than you are. Maybe if you just said that you "like others for their minds" they might be able to understand it more easily.
