Have you ever conducted any experiments with your pet?

Maru is so fat now!! But oooh what a cutie. I still like watching him. (He's the Japanese Scottish Fold internet sensation who got famous in 2008, sliding into empty boxes. Aka the cat with the box fetish.)

Were they tests of skill, intelligence, ability, etc? Tell us.

  • I can't remember what I did to my Pomeranian. Only real experiment I worked on was with some cockroaches. After I found that they like onion, warm temperature and hate clove, coldness.

I captured one in a box with some cloves at a corner and chopped onion at another corner. Everytime I checked, it hovered on the onion.

Then I tried freezing one. After... well I'm not sure how long, it survived. 😂

No worries I am certain I had never frozen my Pom.

    • Thank you for the MHO.

  • My sister had a baby snake named Severus. I still don't have any nieces or nephews (anywhere in my family) so I sent her a silky blanket and some numbers for her to stage him in photos for the first 12mos of his life (much like people do with babies). The experiment was less about the snake and more about whether or not she should actually do the photos with him. She did.

    • I should have done this with my class snakes.

    • by the way, if I had a snake that was conjoined twins (for some reason it's more common among snakes), I would *definitely* name it Severus

    • No nieces or nephews?

  • When I was a physics teacher, I explained the mechanism by which cats land on their feet. Each year, someone admitted that they tested this by dropping a cat upside down from various heights to see how much distance they needed to turn around. Unfortunately, some of the cats did not land on their feet. None were hurt, supposedly, but some may have been scarred emotionally.

    • Eegh. I might have pushed some cats out my bdrm window. I knew they would survive. We had tonnes and they roamed around outside like savages. I was mad at them when they scratched me. My stepfather did not buy "he jumped".

  • Everyone knows that cats like to get in boxes. My wife and I conducted an experiment to see if our cat would sit in a virtual box. We made a small square on the carpet with tape. Sure enough, the cat would come and sit inside the square as if it was the most comfortable place in the house. Lol

    • No way!! Now that is surprising.

  • I tried to find out if a snake will tolerate hats- he did not.

    • Hahaha I would have liked to see the snake wearing a hat.

    • Oh god. Maybe it was the wrong hat heheheheh. Maybe he's a cowbody at heart, for instance. You know how expressive snakes are...

  • I played dead once to see if my puppy would go get help like in the movies.
She just lay down against me.

  • I loved having my ferrets do an obstacle course :)

    • Ferrets are smart but I have one thing to say... peeeyeww.

    • @AmandaYVR yup they stink for sure but I have gotten used to the scent

  • I caught frogs and dissected them. Does that count?

I also dissected one of my class critters to confirm why it died. Many of my students were upset I didn't let them watch.

    • Ay yay yay. I hope you were merciful.

    • In the case of my class critter, an anole lizard named Diego, it was merciful to euthanize him. He had the symptoms of a botfly infection. The autopsy confirmed it. Many of my students cried when he died... and yet several of these same students were upset I didn't dissect him where they could see.

  • my cat has the grumpy face of grumpy cat (rip) the body of maru and finally the tongue of little bub so im hoping to make millions in 2020

    • Sounds like you got a trifecta there.

  • Haha that is such a cute little fatty. Wow 8cms.

    • Yeah have you ever seen anything cuter. Especially watching him slowly saunter away, sashaying his bum...

    • No. I thought it was so cute when he was squeezing himself underneath that cardboard

    • Yeah and his eyes go all big and stretched out, so determined.

  • Ya I wanted to fuiger out if my dog could smell alchohol inside a can so I taught him to bring me cans from the shop fridge then I put pop and beer in there and tested her to see if she could tell the difference she got a average 87% accuracy over 9 days so I guess she can

    • That's great. Would be even funnier if she was deciding when you deserved a beer or not. 🐕‍🦺

  • I put a mirror in front of a Beta fish, to see if it would start fighting
    It didn't

But my friend put a mirror in front of HIS beta and IT started fighting

  • I put scotch tape on the paws of my sister's cats.

    • Lolol that sounds fun. There are many youtube videos of animals with shoes. Cats especially. Some just give up and fall over. "I'm done for. Save yourself" they seem to be saying.

  • Not that I can recall
