Why do men want to become gynecologists?

Some people think that male gynos just want to see and touch boobs and vaginas, but personally I think that if that's the intent, it would be far easier to just get a casual hookup or even watch porn, instead of spending years in school & having to look at vaginas that have STDs.

I'm not a man who aspires to be a gynecologist. However, I think most men who aspire to be gynecologists are just trying to look at, and touch, vaginas and boobs.

  • A male gynecologist would be more likely to be traumatized by the things his poor eyes are going to be subjected to than be aroused by them. He’s not just going to see young, healthy women, although he occasionally will and these kind of patients may arouse him, but he’s primarily going to see older patients and sick patients.

I don’t know about you, but personally I don’t know many women that actually go to the gynecologist if they don’t have a problem. Just like most people don’t visit any kind of doctor unless they feel there’s something wrong with them. If they’re going to a gynecologist, there is likely something wrong. They might have been exposed to an STD, they might have discovered they have cysts in their uteruses, they might have been diagnosed with vaginal cancer, they might have a UTI, or some other kind of infection, all kinds of nasty stuff. None of it is pretty. None of it is nice to look at. I don’t even work in an obgyn office, I work in an ER, but some of the things I’ve seen concerning women and their genital health have been enough to probably scar me for life, and I’m sure I haven’t even seen the worst of it yet.

If a guy is aspiring to be a gynecologist purely because he wants to look at vaginas all day, he’s quickly going to change his mind the second he starts studying and examining all the things that can go wrong with one.

  • Voted B. I think most people who study to become a doctor is usually based on willing to help people.

Now, in case of this specialization, I believe that more than touching female genitalia, they might have extreme curiosity about female genitalia, and find it interesting not just sexually but as biological mechanism. I find normal the curiosity about something you don't have. I also think some might like the idea of seeing babies grow inside their patients and helping giving birth to mothers. Also it can affect the way they was taught those lessons at college or if they enjoyed some student practices on this field.

I have a friend who's studying the degree and he has study all the fields and made practices in many different fields. Some fields he liked before starting the degree stopped beign of his interest after lessons and hospital practices, and the opposite too, he started feeling interest in fields he thought he wouldn't enjoy.

  • Why would it be wrong for a man to be a gynecologist? As it is, women can choose if they want a male or female OBGYN. And many women choose males to be the doctor.

So why would a man want to be an OBGYN? Doctors are scientists. And as such he truly cares and has an interest in the reproductive health of women. Sure, I think we've all stopped for a moment to think about it and everybody has considered the naughty conclusion that a male gynecologist really is obsessed with vaginas. But you're exactly right about vagina overexposure. He doesn't exactly get to choose the vaginas that come to him for care. Some of the vaginas will be fine 18 year old honey pies and some of the vaginas will be disastrous fishy, disease-ridden black holes. I truly feel bad for the wife of a gynecologist. I wonder how interested he is in sex at the end of the day. :)

I think it's also worth pointing out that lesbians may choose to become OBGYNs. And gay men as well. But in the end, it doesn't matter because you get to choose your doctor.

Personally, my doctor is a 5 foot 10, blonde-haired, blue-eyed babe that I swear is a Victoria's Secret model on the weekends. And let me tell you, she gives a very gentle prostate exam that I always go back for. I wonder why she chose do what she does... I really hope it's because she gets off on it. :)

  • Men become gynecologists because most need to practice a specialty to make better money, and people naturally find their way into the various specialties. Why do people become podiatrists, or proctologists, or gastrointestinal specialists, or whatever? Usually, they get curious about a problem, start studying it to find solutions, discover new related problems, etc. and pretty soon they're already well down the path to a speciality. Or maybe there's a lack of people going into that speciality at a given time.

It should be noted that as late as the 1970s, many women refused to go to female gynos, not trusting them to be direct and honest (or knowledgeable) as a male doctor. And plenty of women still request a male gyno (this from a friend who spent 19 years scheduling patients for Kaiser Permanente).

It's no different than women who become urologists - it's just a specialty that they find they're good at or interested in - almost always for medical or financial reasons rather than sexual reasons. It's not like a male gyno is only going to serve 22-year-old Swedish gymnasts - he's going to get plenty of women in their 40s, 50s, and 60s, many unattractive, and many with - umm... "problems" in that area that no one would find remotely attractive.

  • I think women are better at it in general but I could see why a man might want to become one.

A lot of doctors are dual specialists. They study one are and then another that is similar.

Like Hematology/Oncology, blood and cancer doctors are often linked.

One such link is gynecology and urology. Study of the female system and the male system. They can deal with kidney, bladder, and other urinary tract issues, and with the testes and ovaries and all the rest of the fun bits down there. Potentially doubling your patient base can be lucrative.

And a lot of people get into different fields because of personal reasons. Maybe the doctor lost a close relative to cervical or ovarian cancer and they want to reduce the chances of others suffering the same type of loss.

  • A vagina is no different to a ear in the eyes of a medical professional. Why do doctors specialise in any field?

    • From the link I posted above: "Then, during residency, I worked with a lot of doctors in the community, and discovered that, for most of them, it WAS at least partly sexual: they would sit around in the lounges and such and sometimes discuss the anatomy of beautiful women who’d been in, and on two occasions discussed, in front me and everyone else, the sexual anatomy attributes of women who worked in the hospital, nurses and such that were mutual acquaintances."

  • Performing regular exams on attractive vaginas would be one thing, but not all vaginas are attractive. And I don't want to deal with unhealthy vaginas.

  • Why would a lady want to become a proctologist? Not sure. I do not think the male does it for sexual reasons or he will be sorely disappointed with all the old ladies making appointments.

  • it's like the old joke about the difference between a proctologist and a police officer actually being the same thing if you become a proctologist or police officer you get to look at assholes all day so I guess if you become a gynecologist the same would apply but then this might be unrelated but I would also say some plastic surgeons come on I think the best boob job plastic surgeons out there just do it for the money especially if you get to touch them just a thought I think it's relevant thumbs down if you want

  • Male Gynos are creepy and I would never have one

  • I prefer a Male doctor over a female. They seem to take their job more serious because of all the negative stereotypes surrounding their job

  • I’ve kind of wondered this as well.

  • So I voted two. And it's not something to be put into a box. It's the medical profession. It's not simply about helping women. It's the human body. They don't study for attraction, it's for science and biology. At school they are looking at models and diagrams. It's completely non sexual and the man that does it for sexual reasons is wrong for doing so

  • There was this one guy on quora who answered this. He said gynecologists are specialised but still can treat a patient as a whole and don't have to fous only on one thing and that's why he chose it but I don't know, the last time I thought about this I was like 16 or so.

  • I don't question the motives of what choice of specialty a medical student makes, whether they're male or female. More and more women medical students are choosing urology as a specialty. Their gender shouldn't ever be an issue.

  • I think they have some odd level of concern and care for females. There is also a need for this role and people will fill the need. The female anatomy probably just piqued an interest as well.

  • I think its how they do in medical school the best students become brain surgons second best are heart then lungs going down untill u get to buts and viginas and penis lol foot doctors shouldn't be vets lol

    • Yes you are correct (in India) it is like this only

    • It depends on the system But yea in a lot if places it is like that.

    • You don't become a brain surgeon out of medical school, you need to become a neurologist first.

  • Now lets look at the facts, women generally go to a gyno when A. Something is already wrong, B. When they think they are pregnant, and C. When they just need a regular check-up.

Now, I'll admit, I find pregnancy very sexy, but honestly i don't want to look up the skirts of every woman I see. I like the mistery.

I remember seeing an old playboy cartoon, three panels, the first two show a couple of women walking by a man, the man's thought bubble shows them naked, then the third panel shows a woman walking by him naked, and the man has a disgusted look on his face and the thought bubble shows the woman clothed.

  • Beats me. No idea

  • He wants to deliver babies.

  • I would vote E if I wanted to be one. The equivalent would be true with a proctologist.
Preserve lives, make money doing so.

  • I think more than anything it’s about childbirth

  • I think its both. Seeing boobs. Good intentions. But also a desire to impress women as a quality man to date because he can understand a womens body

  • There's no such thing as a gynecologist who only treats attractive young girls, so for every hot babe he gets to see, he has to give a check-up to some fat old hairy grandma.
