Asked my SO if she ever moans during masturbation and she said no. She used to be much louder during orgasm when we had an apartment, which could be embarrassing given the tight quarters, thin walls. In our 2 family house situation, the landlord totally heard us and it was a little awkward bumping into him afterwards.
With kids it has quieted down, even if they aren't around. Probably a learned behavior to keep it quiet, but still get some audible feedback during orgasm. Not as much a while ago though, but still good.

I've wondered that too. I think its learned though because we realize we like it when our partner looks us in the eyes and says our name or grunts or moans during sex. And because we like it we decide to return the favor. Also masturbation is pretty silent for the most part for me too.

I agree with this, I remember I used to try and impress my boyfriend and the sex was great. I was really loud then as I got older more comfortable with sex and had a neighbour mimic me i started to quieten down. When we split temporarily I dated this guy that just wasn't very good looking (without sounding rude I dated hot guys before) and I guess although I liked him I was a little embarrassed. I give him some noise but i dont scream my head off or moan constantly. It's not necessary. I also realise I used to have sex in a way that always put their pleasure before my own. I didn't experience oral until I was 25 I started having sex at 18 nearly 19. I'd ask but I'd be deprived of it, or they do it for a short while. I guess until I seemed wet...
