Do you agree with the Sex Worker decriminalization bill introduced by a female lawmaker and co-sponsored by 3 more female colleagues in Vermont?

Selene Colburn introduced the bill and it was co-sponsored by Diana Gonzalez, Maxine Grad and Emilie Kornheiser last week in the State of Vermont.

“By driving sex work underground, we’re creating much more dangerous conditions for sex workers,” Colburn said. “They should feel like they have the protection of police if they need it.”

I am not in favor of girls becoming prostitutes but there are some who see no other way out of financial emergency's that they find themselves in and some are even forced into it by sex slave rings.

I think decriminalizing it would stop making a crime out of something that is legal if you do it for free and would reduce the number of sex slave rings that operate throughout the nation.

What is your take on this dilemma?

SEX WORKER DECRIMINALIZATION
Do you agree with the Sex Worker decriminalization bill introduced by a female lawmaker and co-sponsored by 3 more female colleagues in Vermont?
A. I think it should remain illegal and the girls who do such a thing should be punished to the maximum extent of the law for their immorality!

C. YES! I agree 100% with the female legisators that it should be decriminilized to be made safer, where the girls could receive medical check-ups and sex slave rings would be more easily caught

  • The prohibition on prostitution has done very, very little to prevent prostitution - prostitution is everywhere, and the Internet makes it very easy.

But much like alcohol Prohibition, the prohibition on prostitution enables and even promotes other crimes, vastly decreases the safety of the prostitutes and the johns, enables corruption, violence, and funds other crimes such as drugs and theft, and is a huge expense for the justice system. Instead, it could be a source of tax revenue and be significantly safer for the women involved.

It's really a no-brainer. The activity is already happening everywhere every day, and that won't change regardless, but it could be a whole lot safer for everyone and could be a revenue positive instead of a negative.

    • Well-said!

  • Just like most illegal things that should be legal in this world the blame is on corporate corruption.
While not a big fan myself I can clearly see that prostitution doesn't harm anyone especially when done right with two freely consenting adults agreeing on fee to be paid for sex.
But in order for a government officials to take bribe in order to overlook a prostitution ring the act itself must remain illegal.
    The same applies to marijuana.
And the line is also very blurry since there are tons of ways to sugar coat prostitution by using some public excuse like a happy ending massage for example.
If you want a good documentary that touches the subject of sex very deeply I can recommend

American Playboy the Huge Hefner Story.

  • Prostitution is like one of the best jobs for a woman, it's like the nature of the woman but sadly, they are fighting against it, a brain can only get you far , but a vagina can make u break the barriers of success and reach your goals

  • I don’t have a problem maybe be safer if done in a brothel where people can get checked and their security anything goes wrong.

    • I mean you can give it away for “free” but you sale things but can’t sell sex.

  • I sincerely hope this bill passes. There is no reason why sex work should be illegal

  • I think sex work should remain illegal, and that it should receive harsher sentences.

People whose contribution to society is prostitution, frankly have no purpose in society and are better off dead.
I definitely don't see the fact that their miserable, worthless existence keeps being perpetuated at the expense of taxpayers and people who perform real labor.

  • I think it should just be legal, tbh. Legalized and regulated. To me, the term "victimless crime" is an oxymoron.

  • It's an interesting idea... It could work to bring down crime rates...

  • I’ve been to Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines and its legal over there. They have to register as a prostitute and carry around a medical card that shows they’re clean from STD’s and must show it on demand. I don’t remember how often they were checked but I think it was weekly. If they don’t have a card or aren’t registered or don’t have a checkup on time there’s stiff penalties. The authorities do spot checks on them. Even so 50% of my ship contracted gonorreah. So learn from that

  • *laughs in The Netherlands*

  • I'm of the opinion that it should stay as it is.

    • Keep the same high level of risk of life, limb and sickness in place would be your vote Mr Phoenix?

    • Keep it illegal is what I mean, there's nothing good nor respectable about it, it's immoral and it's not something that should be promoted nor encouraged not to mention it devalues sex. I also don't view it as "real" work. If you want to help sex workers then give them options, education, give them a way out so that they don't have to resort to that in the first place.

    • OK, that is a long definition of the word 'Yes' ... lol

  • Go after pimps and tricks lock them up for a good amount of time. Lock the hookers up to but don't let the pimps and tricks off so easy.

  • Stay illegal

    • Why?

    • @Guardian45 Because it's a dangerous/degrading so called job.

    • But if it is legal, then it doesn't have to be dangerous and it becomes the Sex Worker's choice. Like in Holland, they receive medical insurance and pay taxes!

  • I believe this is possibly one of the best tools for fighting sex trafficking

  • I'm OK with legalizing it only because if you make it legal, you remove the stigma, and you can go in and regulate it, make it safer.. I mean it's the oldest profession for a reason.. Regardless of the laws it's going to happen.

  • To me. It's a job, and not an easy taking.
To those people who criminalize it, I would like to see them in their situation.

  • It was only really made illegal by married people that weren't getting any at home. If I can't get any, then neither can you.

  • Prostitution isn't wrong because it's immoral; it's wrong because it's a bastardization of sex. Sex should be given freely between consenting adults. If there's a price attached to it, then that means one party didn't REALLY want to do it with the other party (because if they did they wouldn't be charging payment for the service.). So by its very nature it's not 100% consensual. So that's why I'm against it.

    • That logic doesn't work, as long as the sex worker is not being controlled, both parties are voluntarily entering into and engaging in a consensual business transaction for personal gain and benefit. Each is rewarded. One may not like what they do, but it is no one else's business, including the state.

    • Have you ever done a job that you didn't love? Ever dug a ditch for money? Ever mopped a floor or cleaned a bathroom that you wouldn't have cleaned if you weren't getting paid? Both of my grandfathers were master welders who built ships and worked in refineries, and often had to do dangerous (potentially deadly), hot, dirty work, because the work needed done and they needed to earn money for their families. The history of the world is full of people who have done things that they wouldn't otherwise do because someone was paying them to do it. They generally could have chosen another job, but for whatever reason, they did what was asked of them and cashed the check. This is really no different.

    • @MrOracle That's my point exactly. Sex should not be a job.

  • There's actually a lot of things that, if they were legalized, would solve a ton of problems throughout not only crime but the nation as a whole. That includes sex working. Do I support it? Nah. Will I ever partake? No way. But I do support sex work becoming legal, therefore becoming safer and more regulated. ... Besides, America has one of if not the most consumers of porn and porn-related media/items. You'd think it'd be legal by now.

  • It doesn't matter. There is not many "traditional" prostitution methods nowadays since everything runs through the internet. And the only reason now it is really criminalized is because they can't really tax prostitute on the money they get. Since most do it for cash. Now, you have cam girls which is a form of prostitution. But there usually isn't actual sex involved. Just desperate guys throwing money at a woman to see her body. Which is dumb as shit on the guys part.. but he deserves to lose his money if he can't use that energy to actually pay a real prostitute to actually have sex. Anywho, I'm not necessarily in agreement with legalizing it. But I don't think they should be penalized for it. Kind of a grey area, where you do what you want. If you sell your body in service for money. Anything but murder goes, you are a slave for money. Like we are going to our 9-5. It's just easier money with usually little effort.

  • It's largely legal in Europe. Whether the 'dating' suffers or is better off for it is hard to tell. But you do have to take the rest of the society into account - I can't see how sex work would be the only way to get out of financial trouble for anyone. It may be the quickest for those so inclined, I doubt it is the only

  • Now I am not exactly sure if I would ever touch a prostitute I have not ever but I do believe it should be decriminalized on a federal level and regulated the same as pot because people will always be doing it so why not make it like it is in Nevada where the girls are tested and less people are getting harmed?

  • C, it is your body, if you know the risks and don't hurt anyone with your actions; Do whatever the fuck you want!
