I haven't seen a ton, but I noted pretty quickly that in the Japanese porn I've seen, the men seem like near-virgins who have little idea what to do to please a woman, and often act like I would imagine a virgin would act the first time in bed with a naked girl - fumbling awkwardly, flicking her nipples in an annoying way rather than something sensual or exciting, and just a general lack of passion.

Yes, I've seen US porn that was similarly lousy on occasion, but for the most part, it's far more passionate, and clearly the girls are enjoying it a lot more (not all of them, sure - I can tell who is acting and who isn't). The Japanese stuff just seems lifeless and boring.

It all depends on content. The silly drama in any of it is a turn-off to me. Also some stuff is extreme and plays to the camera. You don't do that at home.
The best looks like amateur but with good production values. Short clips that get right to the point. Any ethnicity can be good or bad. Lots of Asian AV are dual career fashion models who just rely on their good looks and graphic acts and closeups and make no attempt at "acting". They come off as amateur but you see what you want to see like body reactions, fluids, etc. Asians seem to do that best.
